Ghostbusters 3 - Harold Ramis Talks A Little More

During a recent interview with MTV Harold Ramis talked a little more about the next Ghostbusters movie, which is currently in the development/scripting stage. Ramis has yet to receive a first draft in hand but claims that he has been consulting with Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman (who both helped helm the original film) and something should come together soon.

Ramis confirmed that all of the original Ghostbusters will return for the third film, if it does happen, and that includes Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman) who has always been publicly negative about being attached to a third installment in the past.

“We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”

Personally I don't think you can get much better than the original Ghostbusters movie, it has to be one of my favourite flicks of all time and the sequel wasn't as bad as people made out either. I have a problem however with the idea of 'young Ghostbusters' and the original cast being their mentors. Yes it's obvious that there's no way you could think that the ageing actors from the first two movies could run around chasing ghosts nowadays but it could go very wrong with this 'passing the torch idea'. I say leave the franchise alone and let us enjoy the originals as classics with their iconic scenes and probably the catchiest movie tune ever performed...

You can't beat the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man for one of the most unique and forever memorable visions of exquisite 80's movie history. (I still have my original 80's Stay Puft toy too. Gotta love that podgy git!)

Fabricated from Ray Stantz's mind by the demi-god Gozer as the ultimate destructor, the gargantuan Stay Puft Marshmallow Man appears from nowhere and stomps through the packed streets of downtown New York causing chaos and destruction underfoot while Ray describes to the Ghostbusters and the audience why Mr. Puft was a pleasant memory from his campside childhood and should have been no threat. The camera tracks Puft's blue sailor capped head flitting in and out of vision between each building top until he finally ends up at the base of Dana Barrett's building and looks up menacingly. He makes an ungodly roar and the Ghostbusters are literally crapping their boiler suits like never before. The scene is topped of perfectly with an outcry from Venkman: "Mother Puss-Bucket"!... Classic.

The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. "He just popped in there"!

Angel Star Andy Hallet Dies Aged 33 From Heart Failure

Being the huge Angel fan that I am I was shocked and saddened to hear today that Andy Hallet who played the entertaining green demon 'Lorne' (aka 'The Host') on the show died on Sunday night of heart failure. Andy had battled heart disease for 5 years and unfortunately it took his life at only 33 years old...

When I read this online this morning I literally shouted out loud "OH MY GOD"! It's always sad to hear when someone dies but when it's someone famous, or someone from a programme you invested a lot of time and emotion in as I did with shows like Buffy and Angel, it can shock you pretty hard. Add the natural shock of his death to the fact that he was only 33 years old, only 2 years older than me, and that really stuck in my mind.

R.I.P Andy

Geek Girls Can Be Hot Too...

OK, so while chatting to my colleague Dan at work today he happened to mention that he reads the reviews and watches the videos over on the website www.comicvine.com

The site basically gives you hundreds of reviews for current comics, movie news and various other fun links that comic geeks can wallow in when they're bored. But one thing had caught Dan's attention, or should I say one person: 'Babs' (aka BatgirlBabs).

Babs is an American girl who does video reviews for various comic titles and the like in the videos section of comicvine. But the point is that she's a real-life super-geek and she's cute. "So what?" many of you might ask. Well you see it's not often that the male geek community comes across cute or hot women who are actually genuinely into things like comics and are normal, intelligent and fun. Don't get me wrong, I've had that fact dispelled a few times during the odd UK event over the years and most definitely at SDCC the last 2 visits but this is a girl I could watch reviewing blank pieces of paper if necessary!

Check out COMICVINE and definately look up Babs' posts if you get the time. Here's a LINK to just one of her reviews. Dan, what have you started!

Wallace And Gromit - New T.V Series Heading Our Way?

Rumour has it that Wallace and Gromit could be set to appear in a new TV show about “amazing contraptions”.

“We’re talking about a series that could involve inventions in which Wallace and Gromit could appear” Oscar-winning Aardman Animations founder Nick Park told The Independent.

“My dad used to spend time in the shed building things” Nick told the newspaper, adding “But I also used to love stories – HG Wells, The Time Machine; you know, those stories which were all about Victorian inventors who built rockets and things like that.

“I think I used to want to be an inventor as a child and I’m sort of living that out. I used to keep a box under my bed with broken toys and old electric motors…”

Nick Park created his famous cheese-loving handyman and his equally famous dog while he was still a student at the National Film and TV School in 1982. Apparently, Nick managed to get Last of the Summer Wine actor Peter Sallis to be the voice of Wallace after sending him “a pleading letter”.

Apparently, talks with the BBC are “still in the early stages” about this new show but if you’re missing the crackin’ couple since we last saw them at Christmas, you can get a fix of W&G by visiting ‘A World of Cracking Ideas’ which is the new Wallace and Gromit exhibition at London’s Science Museum.

Nick also said in the newspaper interview that his Aardman co-founder, Peter Lord, is set to direct a new animated movie entitled ‘Pirates’ which will be the latest offering since the hugely successful films Chicken Run and The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.

“It is a Python-esque take on a pirate story” Nick said. “It will be hilarious.”

There can never be enough Wallace and Gromit in this World. Bring on a new series!!!

Lee Evans Set To Star In Easter Dr. Who Special

I can never get enough of British comedian Lee Evans. Not only is he one of the best stand up comics in the World but he's also very watchable on the small screen in his past t.v and movie roles.

Evans is now set to return to the small screen in the Easter Dr. Who special 'Planet of the Dead' which also stars the stunning Michelle Ryan and David Tennant returning as the Dr again. Evans plays the part of the mysterious boffin Malcolm and from the pics available he looks set to bring a smile to the face of every viewer.

Also appearing in this special will be a new breed of bad guy: The 'Tritovore', a cybernetic bug-like species among the most lethal villains yet seen, as they’re made from the same mould as the dreaded Daleks and psychotic Cybermen.

Ahhh, British t.v over the Easter weekend will be premium viewing what with Red Dwarf returning too... Can't wait!

Oh and just because she's stunning, here are a couple of pics of Michelle Ryan to mull over before Easter. Enjoy!

Lost - Losing A Cast Member To V Remake?

*** WARNING: POSSIBLE MAJOR PLOT SPOILER FOR LOST***

OK, now I'm a little worried. Recent insider reports over at the U.S ABC channel camp have let slip that Lost's Juliet (the lovely Elizabeth Mitchell) may be set to appear in the new series revamp of 'V' as a guest star. "Woo-hoo" I hear you cry, more of the gorgeous Mitchell on our screens... but wait... didn't we recently hear that not only will there be a wedding at the end of Lost series 5, but also that a major player will be killed off permanently?

Surely it can't be my new favourite Lost cast member? Will she get married to Sawyer and then get killed off? Well it's a good bet that that's the case if Elizabeth is set to appear on another show very soon.

I'll just have to hang on to the hope that she's simply got the spare time to jump from Lost to V and back again between shoots and she's not the one set for the chop... ;(

I wait with tense apprehension for the series finale!

Elizabeth Mitchell, I'm making the wedding plans now... for me and her, not her and Sawyer!

Stargate Universe - First Teaser Trailer

Thanks to my mate Phil last night I managed to locate this mini-trailer for the new Stargate series 'Stargate Universe' or 'SG-U' over on the Sci-fi channel website (or should that now be Sy-Fy?).

Stargate Universe—a spin off of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis—follows the adventures of explorers who start off on a reconnaissance mission to the Destiny, a ship built by the Ancients, only to wind up on a never-ending mission when the crew learns the ship can't return to Earth. The Destiny, her crew in tow but not actually in control of the ship, then traverses the universe, bringing them in contact with new worlds and various races, as well as potential allies and enemies.

Stargate Universe will premiere later this year and stars Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, Brian J. Smith, Alaina Huffman, David Blue, Ming-Na and Lou Diamond Phillips.

Here's the very short yet very intriguing trailer:

Karate Kid Remake To be Renamed 'Kung Fu Kid'

Being the fan of Karate Kid that I am I was a little bemused to hear a while back that Karate Kid was getting the revamp treatment and the new version would star Jayden Smith (Will Smith's son) and Jackie Chan in the two main roles of Daniel (although that name might change) and Mr. Miyagi.

Changing a short, podgy, ageing, Japanese man for a middle aged, ultra fit, Chinese man was one thing, but now Jackie has recently let slip during an interview that the film's title will now be 'Kung Fu Kid' due to the fact that the film has a Chinese co-production team and is being filmed primarily in Beijing plus with the drop in interest in Karate and the rise in interest in Kung Fu over the past two decades, everyone thought it would be the obvious step.

I do love Jackie Chan and I love every single one of his films, silly or not, but I don't see this re-vamp being a hit whatsoever. You can never replace Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi (wax on wax off etc) and you'll never film an ending half as good or tense as the 'Crane Kick' finale in the original movie...

An 80's classic...

Sega Megadrive - The Return

Yes you read the post title correctly. This April get set for the return of one of the most popular 16 bit consoles ever created. Hive Entertainment, under the subsidiary name of 'Blaze', the company that recently brought us the Sega Megadrive Handheld (the device that had 20 pre-loaded Megadrive games) is now releasing a brand new version of the original console that not only has 15 pre-loaded classic games but also has a slot for old Megadrive and Genesis cartridges too, meaning that your old Sega carts that are gathering dust in your dingy cupboards can now be replayed for your lasting retro amusement (if you don't own the original Megadrive itself of course!). Another major bonus is that it will play almost every game from every region in the World meaning your imports will have a home on the same unit as your domestic collection for the first time.

The Sega Megadrive Handheld.

The 'Sega Megadrive Twin Pad Console' as it's now called features the following 15 pre-loaded games:
Alex Kid, Alien Storm, Altered Beast, Arrow Flash, Bonanza Bros., Columns, Crack Down, Decap Attack, E Swat, Fatal Labyrinth, Flicky, Gain Ground, Golden Axe, Shadow Dancer, Sonic And Knuckles.

The 15 preloaded games.

You can purchase this retro wonder at either this UK PLAY LINK for £37.99 or from this PLAY ASIA LINK for USD $29.90 (this version is by 'AtGames' and is older, yet completely identical to Blaze's new version!).

The new Sega Megadrive Twin Pad Console.

I'm the proud owner of almost every gaming console (and handheld) ever released in the UK (except for the Neo Geo and the PS3 so far) and I still own my original Megadrive along with a plethora of classic games. I still play oldies like Road Rash 1 & 2, Streets of Rage II and Desert Strike on the odd occasion and the old graphics and sound never seem TOO old compared to the X-box 360 etc when you're having fun. This new machine should allow you to not only choose NTSC or PAL for the output but will also allow 60 hertz play on plasma's and LCD's instead of the old 50 hertz for older CRT T.V's and the like. Unfortunately it probably won't upscale the graphics so you'll have to deal with the massive pixelation that will be seen on larger T.V's.

'Do me a favour, plug me into a Sega...'

Cat Shit One - I Feel Slightly Disturbed

I recently came across this unbelievably strange video for a wonderfully insane animation for something with the unique title of 'Cat Shit One', apparently based on a manga known in the English language world as 'Apocalypse Meow'.

I admit right here and now that this is slightly disturbing. It's like The Unit or Black Hawk Down with fluffy animals killing each other all over the place. You can't help but laugh at its ludicrous visuals and visceral deaths. The whole thing is in Japanese but you can get the general jist of what's going on as it's mainly cold blooded furry action... Freaky...

Enjoy!

Where The Wild Things Are - New Trailer

I don't know a lot about the book nor the movie but this looks like one to watch, even though it seems to scare me to my core for some reason. Takes me back to the days when certain Muppets put the fear of God into me (Beauregard the janitor was the worst culprit, still sends shivers down my spine!). Enjoy!

New Poster - Sherlock Holmes Teaser

Robert Downey Jr as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson? Hmmm, one to see before I pass judgement I think!
Here's the teaser poster nonetheless.

Movie Review - Knowing - Major Spoliers

'Knowing' is a movie I've been looking forward to for some time now. I'm a huge fan of disaster movies, supernatural thrillers and obviously sci-fi and this newest outing had a trailer that really grabbed my attention with its '50 year old piece of paper warns screwed up guy of every major disaster in history premise'.

***WARNING: MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS. DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE AND DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE PLOT OR ENDING.***

Here's the whole plot rundown:
The movie starts in 1959 with a little girl, Lucinda Embry, a fish out of water, that kid in class that everyone thinks is weird and avoids, who seems to be hearing whispering voices in her head. When a time capsule is arranged to celebrate the opening of her school Lucinda and her classmates are asked to draw a picture of what they think their future will be like 50 years on to be placed in the capsule which will then be buried in the school grounds.
Instead of drawing spaceships and futuristic visions of 2009 Lucinda frantically writes down a mass of numbers with no discernible flow or sequence but doesn't get to finish what she's writing before her teacher whisks it away from her. This paper is added to the capsule's contents.
During the capsule burial ceremony Lucinda disappears and is later found in the gym basement scratching the last few digits of her unfinished list into a door with her bleeding fingernails, seemingly in a mindless trance.

Flash forward to 2009 and Josh Koestler (Nicholas Cage) is a grieving widower and single father, trying to keep his life together as a astrophysics teacher and parent while battling depression, alcoholism and a young growing son going through a change.
When the 50 year old time capsule is finally opened each child from the school gets an envelope to open which contains one of the pictures drawn by the kids from 1959. Josh's son Caleb, who now attends this school, receives Lucinda's numbered list and while doing so is viewed secretly by a strange white haired figure in the distance.
During one of Cage's binging sessions that night he manages to come across this list again and figures out that these numbers actually relate to dates and the number of people killed (and later GPS co-ordinates to each event) to every major disaster for the last 50 years (including the event that took the life of his wife previously).

The list is flawlessly accurate and in perfect chronological order with 3 dates yet to pass. Thinking he's crazy Josh tells his theory to a disbelieving colleague and after accepting he might be seeing things that simply aren't there he carries on with his painful life, all the while being watched by the spooky strange man, and then men, with white hair. Caleb even receives a visit from a couple who give him a small black, round stone...
When the first of the 3 dates and locations fall (literally) into Josh's lap with a viscerally filmed plane crash our protagonist knows there's a higher power at work, such as 'destiny' for example, and that somehow he is either the focus for these future events or is at least somehow involved. Determined to see if the second event (in New York) will come to pass Josh calls the FBI and fruitlessly warns them of the impending danger and heads there himself to see if he can stop it.
The second disaster (this time on the underground/ tube) happens with him right in the middle (again a shockingly gruesome and realistically filmed catastrophe). Josh is shocked into a devastating realisation that this is bigger than him and he can't do anything about it and heads home suffering from obvious shock. His colleague now believes him and Josh himself now knows there's no way this list is coincidentally matching numbers to events, so he sets out to discover the meaning of the last set of unfinished numbers on the paper.

Caleb in the meantime receives a vision from one of the white haired men which depicts a burning landscape with dying animals fleeing an encompassing fire. Here is where we are sure these men are no average weirdo's and mean no physical harm to Caleb regardless of the fact they are damn spooky and have supernatural powers (proved again when Josh tries to confront one outside his house and gets a face full of blinding white light from a spooky man's mouth).

During his search for answers Josh has tracked down Lucinda's daughter and granddaughter and confronted them about Lucinda's ability and the prophetic paper, to no avail. Diana, Lucinda's daughter, shut Josh down and ran away without giving any answers.
After a change of heart a while later, when Diana realises Josh is for real when the underground crash happens, they team up to track down not only what was going on with her mother but what the last digits mean.
They eventually find out that the final numbers relate to the end of all life on Earth and the final location (having been scratched into the gym basement door by Lucinda back in 1959) is actually Lucinda's old cabin in the woods that she eventually died in years ago and is the place to head to when the end comes, not the location of the disater like the previous locations. When Josh discovers that the extinction level event is actually going to be a super-flare emitted from our Sun there is a race against time to try and get to safety, a futile effort. The small black stones make a few more appearances throughout this time as they seem to appear in numerous places relevant to the plot with no answer to what they mean.
In the ensuing chaos created by a government warning of impending doom, Abby (Diana's daughter) and Caleb are kidnapped by the spooky white haired men and as Diana gives chase by car she is killed by a lorry (an event seen by her mother years before and something Diana knew was coming). Josh manages to figure out that the spooky men have taken the kids to the old cabin in the woods, surrounded by the mystery black stones seen throughout the movie, and when he confronts them a whole new path is taken with the plot.

The spooky white haired men are actually aliens from the future (I kid you not) who sent the original numbers to Lucinda as a child via a telepathic 'whispering' so that human-kind could prepare themselves for the end of the World and understand what the numbers meant by seeing that they relate to disaster events. The two kids, Calen and Abby (both of which it turns out have been hearing these whispers) have been chosen, along with many other children, to repopulate the species on a distant habitable planet that the aliens are going to take them to in their funky crystalline spaceship that appears over the forest. The catch is that Josh can't go with Caleb... He has to stay behind while his son goes off with the aliens.

When the kids depart a devastated Josh heads back to his estranged parents and sister, now believing in God and the afterlife, where he didn't before, and joins them in a loving embrace as the planet is savagely burnt to a cinder (again some pretty impressive special effects) and they all die...

The movie ends with a very religious image of the two kids, Caleb and Abby, running through a field of golden high-grass on this new planet, wearing white outfits and heading towards a mammoth white tree that resembles the biblical tree of life. Basically a re-envisioning of Adam and Eve in my view.
Alien ships set off in to the sky from all around, presumably dropping off other children across the landscape to fend for themselves and restart the human race... The End.

Review:
OK, so regardless of the fact that this movie jumps from intriguing supernatural-disaster-thriller to close encounters style sci-fi movie in the final act, something that is quite hard to swallow given the events preceding their unveiling, this actually isn't a bad film.
It's definitely slow paced and the tension is at times excruciating (in the bad way) but it does build to a somewhat satisfactory crescendo that, apart from the sci-fi aspect, as a parent, is both heart wrenching and devastating should you place yourself in that unlikely predicament of a father having to give up his son for the continuing survival of not only of him but the entire human race.

The special effects are good (why people complained on the internet before I'll never know) and the disaster events have a realistic, almost Cloverfield-filmed, quality to them that kicks you right in the ass as they're happening in front of your eyes. People rush out of the plane wreckage burning to death and screaming, the train literally evaporates crowds of people in a red mist as it plows through them into the station and the final apocalyptic scene where the World is toasted was reminiscent of movies like Independance Day and Terminator 2 while still feeling more real and destructive than anything I've seen in the past.

The upside is that the suspense was plentiful and the plot did actually go somewhere, even if it wasn't all love and roses in the end, and the whole thing felt like an M Night Shyamalan movie, specifically 'Signs' (even a little of the 1992 Jeff Daniels movie 'Timescape'). That's not a bad thing at all. Signs was a great movie and scared the living hell out of me at times!

The downside is that it's all a little slow paced for most cinema-goers and the end takes a lot to accept if you're not a film geek like me who has to expect this type of plot switcheroo from an offering from a director like Alex Proyas. Nicholas Cage is passable as the brooding widower, but as he gets older he seems to get that little bit more wooden (some would say that happened long ago) and as I'm a huge Cage fan (Con Air, Face-Off, Gone in 60 Seconds, both National Treasure films etc etc) it upsets me to see him reduced to a gibbering mannequin with the charisma of a stale crisp. He doesn't detract from the movie being a good popcorn flick, he was just a bit too depressing, but I guess that was kinda the point for a movie such as this. The rest of the cast were also 'passable' but I couldn't say there was a stand out performance with anyone. It was kind of a 'meh' ensemble which did the job without leaving a lasting impact on my mind.

Overall I would say "go and see this movie". It's not one to avoid but be aware that it could either be a brain teaser or a brain freezer depending on your ability to go with the flow and simply accept what you're watching without dissecting it for more answers than it's already given. You will leave the cinema on a downer if only because of the depressing nature of the movie's premise...

7/10

Grrrrrrrr...

Every time I have the good intention to sit down at my computer and update my blog some outside force sees fit to do something to prevent me from doing it! A couple of weeks back it was illness (which I'd like to add prevented me from going to see Watchmen at the cinema, which I am none to happy about) and then two days ago my pc started to freeze while booting. Now those that know me know that I have self taught myself the ability to build a pc from scratch, how to fix software and hardware errors and how to do some advanced I.T stuff which I'm pretty proud to have learnt, but this one had me stumped. Looking on the Internet is of almost no help these days as so many people have so many answers that don't seem to relate to your particular problems and it usually means going into the base code, formatting your hard drive or something equally repugnant. But after two days I managed to sort the problem, not 100% sure how, but plugging the hard drive into my daughter's pc and backing everything up, doing a virus scan and defragging it seemed to sort the whole thing out once I plugged it back into my rig. I swear I was 1 minute away from giving up and buying a new drive and about 1 minute and 1 second away from throwing the whole thing through the window.

I surprised myself with how reliant I am on my pc being on and available for me at all times without fail. I actually got withdrawal symptoms from not being able to check my regular sites or play my games... how very sad...

Aaaaaaaaanyway, hopefully I'll get back from the cinema early enough tonight (going to see Nicholas Cage's new movie "Knowing") to be able to stick a few update posts on before going back to work tomorrow. Please God let there be a cinema near by still showing Watchmen this week!

Ta ta for now!

Deaths In Smallville And Lost

Smallville will lose two of its pivotal characters when they bite the dust in this season's finale in May on U.S T.V. The two characters who die are a secret at this time but sources close to the production have stated that these two characters will stay dead, there won't be any return for them. There will however be a 'twist' of sorts but this won't involve them coming back to life.

My guess is simply Tess Mercer (Mercy) and Doomsday (Davis Bloome). Otherwise maybe Jimmy would kick the bucket via the whole Davis and Chloe thing that's going on but would they really kill Jimmy Olsen? Nah...

On a similar but more worrying note for me, a major character will die during this season of Lost. The news is as follows:

* A current series regular is getting killed before the end of season five.
* The character who will die is someone who is much-loved by many fans.
* This is a real leaving-the-show death, à la Shannon or Charlie, not a quick-fix time-travel death like Jeremy Bentham/John Locke.
* The character getting killed off is not, I repeat, not Evie's character Kate Austen.

And a source close to the show tells that the person who's being killed off just learned of their character's fate late last week, and the news hit hard. Unfortunately, [he or she] found out after the script treatments were sent out to some of the crew on the set, so it wasn't the best timing.

Hmmm... Difficult this one but I can only think of 3 people it could be this season. Sayid, Desmond or Hurley. I think I'll say Desmond at this time but I don't know why. ;( Come to think of it it could even be Sawyer... Damn it, this'll play on my mind for ages now!

On a happier note there will be a wedding near or during the season finale of Lost. Although the bride and groom haven't been revealed at this time the common thought amongst fans is that Juliet and Jim (Sawyer) will be the two characters tying the knot. Although it could even be Kate and Jack... Or even Ben and the smoke monster, knowing how weird Lost can be sometimes!

Oh and I'd just like to add that although Evangeline Lilly is one of the most beautiful women in the world and definitely in my top 5 hottest T.V babes of all time, Elizabeth Mitchell (aka Dr. Juliet Burke) has definitely caught my attention this season. She looks absolutely stunning and some of her season 5 publicity shots made my jaw hit the floor. Her and Sawyer getting together during the 3 year stint in the Dharma initiative was a highlight of the season for me and for some unknown reason really brought a tear to my eye, I was really happy! Hail to Miss Mitchell, you are a worthy adversary to Miss Lilly this season!

The stunning beauty that is Evangeline Lilly.

Elizabeth Mitchell. Also looking stunning!
