Moving and holiday...

Hi all,

I'm in the process of moving house and having two weeks holiday so there might not be any posts in a while. Once I'm sorted and have phonelines, internet and all that jazz I'll be posting again.

Bye for now!

New Trailer - Batman: Gotham Knight

Ok, this one will be the last one of the night! Another animation that's hit me out of the blue. Like what was done before with the Matrix (The Animatrix) 6 directors have taken Batman and turned him into Anime for a new DVD collaboration called 'Gotham Knight'. Looks amazing and it's another goosebump inducer for me!

Hellboy 2 Trailer...

Last one of the day here, and one of the films I'm most looking forward to, Hellboy 2.

3 New Movie Trailers...

3 trailers to make you eyes water... 2008 is going to be a very good year for movies!

New Trailer - Star Wars: Clone Wars... Nuff Said!

Not even going to bother writing anything for this, just sit back and enjoy!

New Cartoon - Wolverine and the X-Men

I was completely blindsided when I found out about this today. A new X-men cartoon called 'Wolverine and the X-Men' has been confirmed by Avi Arad of Marvel. It will air on Nicktoons Network in the first quarter of 2009. So far, most of the characters shown in a promotional image are dressed in their Astonishing X-Men and Uncanny X-Men costumes with a few slight changes. Production on the series has already begun. The first three episodes, which will air as the pilot for the series, are being written by Greg Johnson, who has contributed to several other Marvel animated features.

The series was in the preproduction stage as of April 2007 and early news had speculated the show to air in fall 2008 - due to air Summer 2008 on BBC UK. However, the speculation came to a rest as according to Marvel Quartely reports, the show is scheduled to air in Spring 2009. It was also confirmed in an article by USA TODAY's website in which it specifically mentions the cartoon starting in early 2009 on Nicktoons Network.

Update - The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

So last week I put up the new Mummy movie poster (seen above), this week I'm adding a bunch of screen shots to get the juices flowing again. Although I pray to God they don't make this movie too laughable or make the series lose any of it's charm, I do hope there's the same frantic action and fantastic sets (which it looks there is) that have made the first two outings such enjoyable films. My one downer (and it's a pretty big one) is that Rachel Weisz isn't reprising her role as Evie... Supposedly she backed out due to being told she'd be playing mother to the 21 year old Alex O'Connell this time round and thought it was far too early in her career to be playing a character that old. Let's hope that isn't true as it just makes her sound plain stupid. (Sorry Rachel, love you really!)

Anyway below is a bunch of pics showing various bits of the film with the movie synopsis underneath:

-Click the pic for a closer look-

Images are as follows from left to right:

Top row - Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) action pose number one, Rick action pose number 2 (a jumping attack a'la Mummy Returns), The Emperor King himself 'Han' (Jet Li)

Second row - Rick and Alex (newcomer Luke Ford) taking aim, Alex in the midst of the terra cotta army

Third row - Rick and Han mid battle, the mysterious terra cotta army

Fourth row - Double-crossing sorceress Zijuan (Michelle Yeoh), Evelyn O'Connell (new to the role of Evie comes Maria Bello ~Coyote Ugly~)

"Explorer Rick O'Connell is set to combat the resurrected Han Emperor in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex, wife Evelyn and her brother, Jonathan. And this time, the O'Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service. Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress to spend eternity in suspended animation, China's ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents. As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force... unless the O'Connells can stop him first".

Oooooh boy I can't wait for this one!

Hot Mama - Jessica Alba

Technically she's not a 'Mama' just yet, but Jessica Alba is looking even more gorgeous than usual during her pregnancy. Pictured below on the US programme 'The Late Show with David Letterman' recently Jessica was positively glowing and her current figure suits her very well.
Miss Alba I salute you, hot Mama indeed!

Futurama's Back Baby (again...)

For all the hordes of Futurama fans out there, and there is a lot of us, this is another treat to look forward to; The release of the second direct-to-DVD movie 'Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs'!

Wiki Description:

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs
is the second of the four straight-to-DVD films, the first being 'Benders Big Score'. The film will be released in the USA on June 24, 2008, followed by a UK release on June 30, 2008.

The film will follow directly after the cliffhanger events of Bender's Big Score and will include a "planet-sized alien from another universe" voiced by David Cross (pictured below).

In what Fox is calling the most tentacle-packed Futurama epic, space itself rips open, revealing a gateway to another universe. What lies beyond is a mix of horror and love as the Planet Express crew encounters a repulsive, planet-sized monster with romantic intentions.

The film will feature voice overs from: Brittany Murphy, David Cross as a tentacled alien named Yivo, Professor Stephen Hawking reprising as himself, and Dan Castellaneta will reprise his role as the Robot Devil.

I've been looking forward to these new DVD movies for a while and although Benders Big Score wasn't as good as I'd hoped (it lacked something compared to the series) it was still enjoyable and it's great that Futurama returns at all, in any way or form!.

"GLADIATORS RRR-EADY"!

Well, well, well... lookee what we have here! Returning to our screens on Sunday the 11th of May on Sky One is Gladiators, and it's set to be a big comeback for the popular 90's show.

Now hosted by the the stunning Kirsty Gallacher and popular ex footballer Ian Wright, this new series once again brings us determined contestants who go up against muscle-bound Gladiators in multiple events testing strength, endurance and skill for the ultimate prize of £50,000.

Ol 'Stripy shirt' referee John Anderson will return to mediate events with his token 'rrr-eady' phrases and loud Scottish bellow and although there will be more varied events than previously (water events now included for example) the general look and feel will be the same as before, bringing that old 90's nostalgia back to the fans who watched it as kids. Listen out for the new dramatic theme tune!

12 fresh new Gladiators from different physical-discipline backgrounds have been picked for this new series and each one has a silly nickname just as before. They are:
(1) Oblivion, (2) Battleaxe, (3) Atlas, (4) Enigma, (5) Panther, (6) Tempest, (7) Tornado, (8) Ice, (9) Predator, (10) Inferno, (11) Spartan, (12) Destroyer

I've already chosen my favourite of the bunch and that's 'Inferno'. I have no doubt that body of hers could deflect bullets it's so rock hard! Nothing on Jet of course but the best of the bunch for me ;)

Although I'm not going to say I'm looking forward to this new run of Gladiators just yet I have to say I loved the original series when names like Wolf, Cobra, Jet, Hunter, Shadow, Nightshade and Lightning (to name but a few) were all household names and kids used to talk about their favourite character in the playground and swap stickers with their mates. I know I had an obsession with Jet (Diane Youdale) back in the day, and I certainly wasn't the only one. I had posters, pictures, figures, badges and stickers all over my room of this lovely lady. When she left I no longer had much interest for the show and the newer Gladiators never hit the mark for me.

We'll see if the new series has anywhere near the impact of the 90's show (I won't hold my breath) but with new talent in both the presenting and Gladiator cast it may well get past it's first season without being shot down by retro fans and critics. On the plus side I've read that there will be 3 'legends specials' that will have classic UK Gladiators Hunter, Saracen, Lightning and Scorpio return to the arena as special Contenders facing the might of the brand new team. That in itself should be worth watching!

For more information visit http://gladiators.sky.com/gladiators

Oh and just for my own satisfaction here's another pic of Jet, in a skimpy bikini... Ah those were the days...

Iron Man - Mini Movie Review

Well, what can I say? Marvel have hit the proverbial (Iron) nail right on the head here! Iron Man rocks!

I finally got to see this movie last night after months and months of painful waiting (more painful when you've seen the toys, characters and movie footage before anyone else at Hasbro's head office way back in 2007 and been to the San Diego Comic Con unveiling!) but it was most definitely worth the wait. Having been a fan of Iron Man for many years, my fears of another silver screen injustice were laid to rest as I watched an enjoyable, shiny new superhero movie.

Warning: Spoilers

Y'know it's always difficult to watch an initial 'birth of a superhero' movie, more so when you're a fan and you know the whole 'how they got where they are' background story. That said movie studios are getting better at it and recent films such as Spider-man and Batman Begins have been enjoyable outings with a firm promise (and delivery) of more action packed sequels. Once you get past the whole 'birth' part you're free to get on with the good stuff, but it's a necessary evil. I have to say that in Iron Man's case I thought this definitely worked to its advantage and that the creation and building process of the Iron Man armour was an incredibly enjoyable thing to watch. Non fans might think that this dragged a little but this makes the movie what it is, an insight into this characters ability and mindset.

Tony Stark, a multi-millionaire weapons manufacturing industrialist and flamboyant playboy is taken prisoner in the Middle East and forced to create a weapon for the enemy of the United States. During his capture he takes shrapnel to his chest (from one of his own weapons used against him) and needs an electro magnet placed in his chest to keep shards of metal away from his heart. The man who saves Tony's life is Yinsen, another prisoner who ends up helping Tony build a giant suit of armour to escape their prison instead of the proposed weapon.
After escaping his captors with his rough and clunky Mark 1 armour Tony returns to the US a new man, a man with a mission to stop his weapons being used against his country and his fellow Americans. He decides that his company can no longer follow the course of manufacturing weapons and must go in a different direction, much to the shock of his colleagues and business partner. As a technical genius Stark begins to upgrade his armour designs, testing a Mark 2 silver version out (with some laugh out loud moments of hilarity which Robert Downey Jr pulls off perfectly) and eventually settles with a sleeker, more powerful red and gold version which runs smoothly from a new miniature Arc Generator placed in his chest (which replaces the old electro magnet installed in his prsion cave).
The film focuses on Tony's building and testing of his new superhero suit while his business partner Obidiah Stane is shown to be a back stabbing, money hungry turncoat, intent on Tony's downfall and death. Stane obtains the specs for the Mark 1 armour and builds and new prototype 'Iron Monger' armour which he intends to eventually make billions with on the weapons market. The only way he can make the armour work however is with Tony's Arc Generator and no-one else has the techno-savvy to remake it. Commence the battle for power...

Robert Downey Jr was born to play the role of Tony Stark, much as Patrick Stewart was a perfect Xavier in X-men or Christopher Reeves was for Superman. His one liners and dry humour in the movie hit the mark and his scenes sparkle with a natural ability to draw the audience in to believe this man could really do what he's doing.
Gwyneth Paltrow is simply stunning as Pepper Potts and shines as Stark's faithful assistant and genuine love interest. Their scenes together seem natural and you can almost believe a playboy like Tony would give it all up for her, which is what we all want to see isn't it?
Jeff Bridges plays the greedy bad guy well and looks almost monstrous with his bald head and beard. I still can't believe that's the same guy that was in Tron and Starman! His defection is played well and again the believability factor is there in spades.
Terence Howard in a very likable addition and comes across well as Tony's friend and confidant. The character of 'Rhodey' will be known to fans as the future 'War Machine', another suit of armour that Stark builds with a black and grey paint job and heavy artillery. Let's hope we see this brought to life in the sequel as I know it'll kick ass if it's included. It's even hinted at when Howard sees the Mark 2 armour and quips "next time" with a smile on his face.

All in all the movie couldn't have been executed much better than it was, sure there's a few incongruities and a few 'he wouldn't have survived that' moments but hell, it's a superhero movie and we forgive all that to see the shiny special effects and the pretty explosions. Hopefully we'll see a lot more screen time for the actual armour in action, there just wasn't enough of that here for me this time round. Need the eye candy dammit!

Warning: Super Spoiler

OK so now one of the best bits. If you stayed behind after the credits you would have seen a special scene with Samuel L Jackson cameoing as Nick Fury: Director of Shield. This was always going to be a cool addition since the 'Ultimates' comic book introduced a black version of Nick Fury (based on Jackson) to the new take on the Avengers way back in 2002. Although Sam only has a few lines to say, they are the single most important lines in the whole movie and hint at something fans will be wetting themselves to see in cinemas soon. Fury states to Stark that he's not the only superhero in the world and that he'd like to discuss with him something call the 'Avengers Initiative'. Now for all you people who have no idea what the Avengers are then here's why it's so important. The Avengers are a team of superheros created back in the 60's that originally comprised of not only Iron Man but also Captain America, Thor and Hulk among many others. This is one of the most famous and much loved Marvel comic books of all time and reflects the DC Universe's super team 'The Justice League of America' (a film recently scrapped by studio bosses).

Luckily enough for us fanboys the Avengers is in the works for a July 2011 release date. Before that time though we have Iron Man 2 set for April 2010, Thor for June 2010 and Captain America (titled 'The First Avenger') scheduled for May 2011. Many more Marvel movies to come then! AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!

Breaking News... Well Not Exactly...

Robert "Bob" Banana, famous lead singer for the band "Banana Tree" was found dead in his London flat last night after hanging himself. Reports confirm that Bob was suffering from depression and mood swings after his band mates Barry "The Skin" Banana, Brian "Bunch" Banana and Benito "Straight Boy" Banana left the band and went their separate ways last month after a falling out.
The coroner said that they didn't think his death was suspect but attributed it to suicide stemming from the recent "BANANA SPLIT".......

Hot Mama - Halle Berry

Is it just me or is Halle Berry looking unbelievable after having her baby? She's obvioulsy now sporting beach ball sized airbags under her top, and if she leans forward too far she's bound to crumble like a Jenga stack, but nevertheless she's most definately one hot Mama! I salute you Ms Berry. ;)

Nuff Said...

Damn right too... Nobody f***s with The Chuck!

New Dark Knight Poster To Wet Your Appetite

Out of the many movie posters released recently for The Dark Knight, this poster is the most revealing of the lot. As you may well have heard the Joker (played by the late great Heath Ledger) will not be the main focus of Batman's problems in the new movie. Two face is confirmed for a dramatic appearance/ birth and the storyline will show Harvey Dent's rise and fall from district attorney and ally to Batman to the two-sided, coin wielding, villain we've all been waiting for. If you hadn't noticed each of the three characters below are covering one side of their face with an object signifying Two-Face's 'half and half' persona. Another blockbuster 2008 movie I'm dying to see... Not long now.

New Mummy Movie Poster To Wet Your Appetite

Well here it is. The new poster for the upcoming "Tomb of the Dragon Emporer" movie, the 3rd in the trilogy of 'The Mummy' movies, due out this year. I'm really looking forward to this movie (not least because Jet Li is playing the Emperor!) and hope that the abscence of Rachel Weisz playing Evie this time round doesn't ruin what will hopefully be another enjoyable outing for the O'Connell family.

Movie News - Transformers 2

The first details to about Transformers 2 are now seeping out of the Hollywood grapevine. Jonah Hill (most famous for the recent hit 'Superbad') is the first part of negotiations to play the part of Sam's room mate and conspiracy theory nut in the sequel due out next summer. His character is described as "(a guy who) runs a conspiracy theory website. Funny in an irreverent, edgy way, he is shocked to see his conspiracy theories come to life." Good news for the fans who thought the humour in Transformers the movie made the film a huge sucess, bad news for those of you that have had enough of Jonah at this point in time! (Isn't he everywhere right now?!)

The second bit of news, and a far more exciting tid-bit, is that we could well be seeing the constructicons making an appearance in this new movie. If you know anything about Transformers then you should know that it means DEVASTATOR could be coming! Devastator is a ginat sized robot formed by the constructicons coming together into one giant bot. Rumour also has it that this could lead to Grimlock and the Dinobots being included too, although I find that pretty hard to believe at this stage. We'll have to wait and see.

Below is an image of Devastator (created by Rise Studios) to give you an idea what he could look like should plans come to fruition.

"Autobots, transform and roll out"!

Upcoming Movie - G.I. Joe (2009)

IMDB Synopsis: An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.

Stephen Sommers (director of Mummy, Mummy Returns, Scorpion King and Van Helsing) will direct from a script by Stuart Beattie. The story is set at Brussels-based G.I.JOE, an acronym for the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, and revolves around an international co-ed force of operatives who use high-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil org headed by a Scottish arms dealer.

I'm of two minds as to how cool this movie could turn out. I never collected the toys or watched the TV series, although I've seen the animated movie, so it's difficult for me to judge but I'm trying to be really positive! The actors are a plus, half the costumes are a plus, but Dennis Quaid's costume worries me as does the director Stephen Sommers. Nothing against the guy, I loved the Mummy franchise, but his CG heavy outings can get a little out of control (Van Helsing for example) and get a little tongue in cheek at times. Hopefully this'll be a great movie and re-vamp some 80's love into another action figure line franchise. Below is the cast list from IMDB and a few of the images so far released. Ray Park looks great as Snake Eyes and Sienna Miller looks stunning as The Baroness. If only all the other outfits looked as good I'd be happy. Mr Quaid doesn't deserve the uniform he's been given, please re-dress the man before filming dammit!

Doomsday... Movie Mini Review

IMDB Plot Synopsis: Doomsday takes place nearly three decades after a lethal virus called the Reaper nearly wipes out Scotland and causes the rest of the world to wall off the country. When the Reaper begins to emerge in England 25 years later, an elite team and their leader (Rhona Mitra) are sent to the contaminated landscape of Scotland to find a cure.

My Synopsis: BLOODY. AWFUL. FILM.

I'm sorry to those of you that may actually find some enjoyment from this drivel but I certainly did not. It's one and a quarter hours out of my life I'll never get back, that's for sure.

The problems are as follows:

Doomsday is a poor Englishman's Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome and Escape from New York hybrid. There are scenes that are almost exact duplicates from those two 'far superior' movies and that kind of re-hash really annoys me! The wall around Scotland idea, the battle between Rhona's character (Major Eden Sinclair) and the giant bad guy in an arena surrounded by resident nutters, the car chase etc etc. Same old, same old but so much worse...

Malcolm McDowell, Bob Hoskins and Alexander Siddig are all woefully underused and I'm amazed they were cajoled into appearing in this film at all. You wouldn't consider them A-listers but c'mon they act like bad Punch and Judy characters with the poorly written scripts and badly directed scenes, so much so that I felt uncomfortable watching them.

Rhona Mitra hasn't done herself any favours taking the lead in this movie either, her wooden acting makes Pinocchio looks like a 'real boy' and elevates her 'action heroin' rival Mila Jojovich to almost Oscar standards in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I like Miss Mitra and she's definitely got the looks and body of a future action star but with the material she's given it's a surprise she didn't phone her scenes through...

The random scenes of over the top gore left me asking "why"? It seemed so unnecessary in places and lowered the film to a cheap hack slash/ shock horror film that it just didn't need to become.

The editing in places was amazingly bad, during one car scene for example the camera flitted around like a one winged budgie trying to take flight and I actually had to look away as it was doing my head in.

All in all I was thoroughly unimpressed by this movie (as you can obviously tell) and from a director and writer who brought us much more interesting movies like Dog Soldiers and the Decent I'm a little worried Neil Marshall has lost his way.

2/10 (and the two points are for Rhona Mitra herself!)

Collector News Update... May the frog be with you!

How frickin cool are these new Star Wars - Muppet figures?! A new line of small figures based on various well known Muppets dressed up as Star Wars characters is being released by Disney very soon. More information to follow as to when these will be released but rest assured if they're at the San Diego Comic Con in July I'll be getting them! Rizzo as Yoda? Classic!
