Turtles Forever & Ben 10 Alien Swarm Mini Reviews...

Recently I got the chance to catch both the new 25th anniversary cartoon Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles movie "Turtles Forever" and the new Ben 10 live action movie "Alien Swarm".

Below is a mini movie review for each just in case you haven't caught them yourselves yet. Beware that there are spoilers in the reviews.

Turtles Forever

"Sometimes four ninjas just aren't enough!" Were you a fan of the Turtles back in the 80's? I was a huuuuuuge fan, in fact I was obsessed! No surprises there I suppose but I'm now 31 years old and I'm still a fan... When I originally saw the poster and heard the synopsis for the Turtles Forever t.v. movie I thought it was all a joke. I was sure it was some fan created film that was based on the characters but not connected to the actual studios etc.

Well I was wrong. I got the chance to watch the movie the other day and I have to say that I loved it! The synopsis is pretty complicated (especially if I'm trying to explain it) but it's basically a story of cross dimensional meetings of 3 different sets of Turtles including the newest cartoon versions, the 80's versions and the original black and white Eastman and Laird versions along with their respective Shredder's and many minions.

It wasn't Shakespeare as you'd probably expect but it was damn good fun for a Turtle fan like me. The movie featured such classic characters as Kang, Beebop and Rocksteady, the Utrom, April and Casey etc etc. It was fun watching the newer and more serious Turtles interacting with the crazy and fun 80's versions and then seeing the classic hardcore black and white Clint Eastwood style Turtles popping up too. The scenes with the 80's Shredder and Krang brought back some fond memories from my childhood and reminded me of collecting the action figures, the stickers and the various paraphernalia back in the day. The last few seconds of the film were a nice touch and if you haven't seen it I won't spoil it, but it was cool.

If you're not a fan of the TMNT then I suggest giving this a miss as it's not the best made cartoon ever and if you're looking for quality content you'll probably find it lacking, but if you're a fan like me I think you'll probably love this and it was a lot of fun for a 25th anniversary comeback.

Based on how much fun I had watching it rather than the quality of the content I have to give it a 7/10 score.

Ben 10: Alien Swarm

I'm also a big Ben 10 fan, and especially a fan of the newer Alien Force cartoon. I have to admit that when I saw the original live action movie "Race against time" I was highly disappointed and even though we got to see a few of Ben's aliens like Diamondhead and Wildmutt I thought the acting was bad and the story was terrible.

Unfortunately Alien Swarm is even worse on both these points. The writers and director deserve a thorough beating for the lame story and dialog and the actors needed a red hot poker up their respective butts to get them going, they were more wooden than Pinocchio! The big selling point to these live action movies has to be seeing the aliens in all their CGI glory but unfortunately we only get to see Big Chill and Humongousaur before being given a new alien in the form of Nanomech. It's poor on so many levels for all the fans out there and all the long bike riding scenes and crappy character interaction just makes things worse. OK so they got Kevin's car right, and even Kevin himself is the most believable character on screen compared to his cartoon counterpart (which isn't saying much), but I'm afraid this was a big steaming pile of crap that should be avoided at all costs. A huge letdown for anyone looking forward to it... 1/10

The new Alien Swarm action figure of Nanotech found in my local shopping center yesterday.

Cool Robot Invasion Short - "Ataque de panico!" (Panic Attack)

Over at scifiwire.com today I found a great little short video called "Ataque de panico!" (Panic Attack) directed by Uruguayan commercial director Fede Alvarez which features the invasion of Montevideo by giant robots...

I've always been partial to movies featuring robots or alien invasions so this 4 minute short really tickled me. Loved the music used too. Supposedly it only cost $500 to make but was so impressive for Spidey director Sam Raimi that one of his studios has made a deal with Alvarez to turn the short into a full blown feature film... District 9 anyone?

Enjoy!

New Hard Hero Thundercats Statue - Cheetara!

I'd posted a little while back that the statue company "Hard Hero" were starting a production of classic Thundercat products starting with the awesome looking Lion-O.

Now they've announced the second in the series which of course had to be that fox in an orange leotard "Cheetara"!

The first image of the statue is below. No doubt it'll be up for pre-order online very soon.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration - WTF? Van Damme & Lundgren Are Back!

Are their careers flailing that badly that Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren have to go back to the tired-ass franchise of Universal Soldier once again to get their paycheck? And in a direct-to-DVD outing too? Seems so...

Universal Soldier: Regeneration resurrects and reunites both original UniSols Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Lundgren) as the world is threatened by terrorists intent on creating a nuclear catastrophe using their new next gen soldier (UFC fighter Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski).

Deveraux ends up trying to save the world whilst fighting both the new UniSol and the upgraded older Scott who are intent on extinguishing the lives of millions... Enjoy the trailer!

Dr. Who: The End Of Time - New Trailer

Did you see The Waters of Mars a few weeks back?

To tell you the truth I didn't actually think that much of the episode in general and it only really kicked in for me at the end when the Dr goes all "I'm not the survivor, I'm the winner, the Timelord Victorious". Maybe I'm being too harsh and need to watch it again, I'm not sure.

Anyway we all now know that he'll be dead (well as dead as Timelords get) by the end of 2009 but the new trailer below, shown after Waters of Mars, still gives any Who fan goosebumps.

Smallville: Absolute Justice - First Trailer And Images!

Probably the biggest Smallville event since the Justice League episode "Justice" which featured the combined heroic efforts of Superman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Cyborg and Impulse, the new 2 hour t.v. movie titled "Absolute Justice" is what we're getting now instead of the two separate episodes previously announced, which were going to be called 'Society' and 'Legends'.

As we already know from one of my previous posts, the event will feature Hawkman, Stargirl and Dr. Fate from the JSA. However it seems that they are not the only Justice Society members that will appear in the episode. The clip below also shows an exciting glimpse of Golden Age Sandman and Alan Scott as Green Lantern (although you only see his iconic ring for a second)! How frickin cool is that?! I mean I know the outfits in the pics look pretty camp, and not unlike the kind of cosplayers you see at the San Diego Comic Con every year, but you have to admit that they're pretty damn accurate to their comic counterparts and are way over the top (in a good way) for a programme like Smallville, which is usually all about the leathers and underplaying famous costumes. It's a bold step for the shows creators but I'm sure it'll pay off in the end. Even when Clark is looking at the JSA picture on the wall you get goosebumps just thinking about who else could pop up!

Personally I'd love for Powergirl to appear, but as I've said before it wouldn't be possible because of so many continuity reasons. However you can't deny that it'd increase male viewing of that mini movie tenfold! And just for fun I'd like to see this pictire below actually come to life on screen. Gemma Atkinson as Powergirl? I just died and went to geek heaven!

There's also news that the Absolute Justice event will mark the return of Phil Morris' Martian Manhunter, and that Brian Austin Green will return again as Metallo later in the season.

We'll also be seeing Carlo Marks return to Smallville (he played Chloe's fiance in "Apocalypse" back in season 7) but this time playing Steven Swift, aka Warrior Angel! Can't wait for the rest of season9 now!

Family Guy: Something, something, something, Dark Side Trailer

Well here it finally is ladies and gents... The long awaited trailer for Family Guy: Something, something, something, Dark Side. SSSDS is the second Family Guy Star Wars movie which obviously follows Empire Strikes Back, and it looks frickin excellent.

Can't wait to see this when it's released on Dec 22nd on DVD and Blu-ray. Enjoy!

Best Music Video Ever? Muppets Do Bohemian Rhapsody!

This video has been all over the web over the last couple of weeks and as a huge fan of the Muppets I have to say that it is truly awesome. I had a smile on my face for the whole thing!

Stick with it to til the end, it's a great video.

Thor And Avengers Movie News.

There's been a hell of lot of Marvel movie news lately and mainly to do with the upcoming Thor and Avengers films.

Here's some of that news:

Thor is blasting through its casting at the moment and we've found out that Stuart Townsend. Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano have been chosen to play the Warriors Three, Fandral the Dashing, Volstagg the Valiant and Hogun the Grim. I don't follow the Thor comics so I don't know how big or important these guys are but the buzz has been pretty positive so far.

Donald Blake won't be appearing in the Thor movie after all? I don't read Thor but I know who Donald Blake is and the news had previously been that Thor's human vessel would play a pretty big part in the movie... Now it's been slipped that Blake is out altogether and that Thor will simply arrive on Midgard (Earth) as himself with no need for Blake's inclusion. Interesting but strange!

Idris Elba (RocknRolla, American Gangster) has been cast as Heimdall in the Thor movie too. For those of you that dont know (and I didn't either) Heimdall is the badass guardian of the BiFrost Bridge which leads to the mythical world of Asgard. Looks like this hints that Asgard will be attacked at some point in the movie as Heimdall supposedly never leaves his post, so if we're seeing him in the film then the bridge must come into play at some point!

Kat Dennings (40 year old virgin) has been cast in an as yet unknown role in the Thor movie. The information was released accidentally by Natalie Portman during a recent interview and her name is now up on the IMDB page for Thor but as two of the main female roles in the film are taken it's unclear if she'll play anything other than a tiny role, maybe a nurse? Another hottie to add to the mix is good though when you've already got Portman and Jaimie Alexander in there too!

Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) might be playing Hawkeye in Thor and the Avengers movie? The news way back at the beginning of this year was that both Black Widow and Hawkeye would appear in the Iron Man 2 movie. The Black Widow part of that rumour turned out to be true but Hawkeye was dropped for some reason. Now it seems Hawkeye might be back as Renner has been approached to play the role in not only the Thor movie but possibly in the Avengers movie too. I'm going to start getting very excited if more Avenger characters start getting announced, especially if they're going to be popping up in individual Marvel movies before the big Avengers event in a couple of years. We'll see if this is true as it's not confirmed yet, but it'd be cool if Hawkeye does make it to the big screen!

Robert Downey Jr implies he's not in the Avengers movie? Jr made a comment to Entertainment Weekly recently that if his new Sherlock Holmes movie doesn't perform well that he may retire from acting and settle down with his wife! He stated that he'd never had it so good as he's having it at the moment and that he'd love to go out to movies with his missus, finish the books he's reading, paint and listen to music. If this movie does well then that's cool, he'll be busy working in the industry for at least the next 10 years. He implies that he's under no contractual obligation for any future movies (even though it was assumed he was at least signed up for a Marvel multi picture deal including Avengers) so the question is: Is he just playing with fans minds? Is he being the aloof Robert we all know? Or is he really saying he's not tied to the Avengers? Because that would be just devastating to know that he wasn't portraying Iron Man in that movie!

More news as it's released!

Kelly Brook As Indiana Jones? Yes Please!

I've always been a huge fan of Kelly Brook and before Megan Fox came along I can safely say she was my favourite female of all time.

This new pic below satisfies two of my geeky sides... The movie geek and the female hottie geek. Kelly Brook posing as Indy is super-freakin-hot and should certainly be the way the franchise goes in the future! I'll bet my fedora hat that it'd be a hell of a lot more popular that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!!

Megan Looking Foxy Again!

Here at Kryptonianwarrior.blogspot.com we can't get enough of Megan Fox... But of course you know that already.

As the Transformers hottie has done yet another awesome photoshoot (this time for New York Time Magazine) I feel obliged to share some of the images with you here, as always, to brighten up your day.

You can find the full photoshoot HERE over at Popoholic.com.

Enjoy!

Firest Photo And Synopsis For Shrek 4 - Forever After

Again another set of movies that my family loves... Shrek!

Shrek: Forever After is the final cinematic movie from the Shrek franchise and this new image has recently been released showing Shrek himself and the master of trouble Rumpelstiltskin!

Synopsis:

The premise is the Brothers Grimm meet It's a Wonderful Life: After rescuing a princess, getting hitched and fathering triplets, Shrek is feeling over-domesticated. "He has lost his roar," says director Mike Mitchell (Sky High, Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo). "It used to send villagers running away in terror. Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches."

To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, the wee troublemaker who popped up briefly in Shrek 2 and 3.

Of course, the pact goes awry and Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away if he had never existed. That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.

Shrek Forever After should be released around July 2010.

New Toy Story 3 Trailer...

I don't think there's one person on the face of this Earth that isn't looking forward to Pixar's Toy Story 3 movie... If there is I don't like you, it's as simple as that.

This new trailer below gives you not only a bit of nostalgia with some stuff from the original two movies but a section from number 3 too. Goosebumps all the way for fans like me!

I know my whole family is sooooo excited about this film it's unreal.

Dwight Schultz And Dirk Benedict Signed Up For Cameos In New A-Team Movie!

As if it wasn't cool enough that an A-Team movie was currently in production with a wicked looking cast, we now find out that both the original 'Howling Mad' Murdock and Templeton Peck aka Faceman, Dwight Schultz and Dirk Benedict, have signed on to cameo in the film!

Although both the roles are tiny and so far unknown it'll still be uber-cool to see two of the original A-Team in the movie, handing over the reigns to the new actors who may well turn the whole thing into a new franchise with multiple sequels in the future.

Unfortunately Mr.T has been quoted as saying he definitely won't appear in the revamped movies as he has too much respect for the 80's classic and thinks appearing in the new film would be like cheating on your wife with a mistress! And of course Hannibal himself, George Peppard died back in 1994 so we'd never get the whole original team back anyway...

Can't wait for this movie, even more so now!

Is Lara Croft The Hottest Female Gaming Character Of All Time?

OK so there's a running theme here... First Jessica Rabbit and then Lara Croft. Fantasy ladies that don't actually exist.

I've posted quite a few times on this blog about Lara and the various actresses and models that have portrayed her over the years but the designinspiration.com had a recent article about the busty Tomb Raider girl which featured numerous pics from excellent artists who have all drawn her at some point in their careers.

The full gallery / article can be found HERE and again there are some examples below. Enjoy!

Is Jessica Rabbit The Hottest Cartoon Female Of All Time?

I only ask the question of whether Jessica Rabbit is the hottest cartoon female of all time as the designinspiration.com did a special article a while back where a number of artists representations of lil'ol Jess where amalgamated into one page showing their talented pics.

You can view the page with over 20 images HERE on the site with a few examples below.

For those of you that discovered they could fancy a cartoon back in 1988... Enjoy!

New Transformers Movie Mighty Muggs From Hasbro

If you didn't know by now I'm a huge Mighty Mugg fanatic and own pretty much every Mugg released over the last couple of years, including the rare SDCC exclusives.
The Crimson Blur e-mailed over an image a while ago that shows 2 of 2010's new proposed releases which seem to be the Transformers movie Bumblebee and Optimus Prime.

As far as I know the entire range of Hasbro's funky urban vinyl range will be handed over to Toys R Us in the USA as an exclusive deal for 2010 which means us Brits will probably have to scour eBay for them, paying through the nose to get them imported.

Either way, I'd love to get my hands on these!

WHAT DOES 2010 HOLD...PLEASE, NO MORE VAMPIRE LOVE STORIES!!!

For all of us that think TWILIGHT is a waste of time, effort, and Kirstin Stewert's ample charms, here are some of the more ADULT horror and sci fi offerings coming your way.

I've included as many trailers as I could find, but I'm sure I'll add the missing ones when they eventually get onto the net.

2010 looks like a good year so far, but please be aware that release dates change and other movies may spring up for surprise releases throughout the year....I'll keep you posted.

The story centers on a lone hero named Eli (Denzel Washington) who must fight his way across the wasteland of post apocalyptic America to protect a sacred book that might hold the key to saving the future of humanity. The wolfman

The story follows a man who returned to his homeland from America only to be bitten by a werewolf before himself enjoying predatory nocturnal ramblings.
Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, "The Wolfman" brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar® winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother...and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Lawrence Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate. As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself...one he never imagined existed.

The crazies

David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house…after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Sheriff Dutton tries to make sense of what’s happening as the horrific, nonsensical violence escalates. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh…with insanity. Now complete anarchy reigns as one by one the townsfolk succumb to an unknown toxin and turn sadistically violent. In an effort to keep the madness contained, the government uses deadly force to close off all access and won’t let anyone in or out – even those uninfected. The few still sane find themselves trapped: Sheriff Dutton; his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell); Becca (Danielle Panabaker), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson), Dutton’s deputy and right-hand man. Forced to band together, an ordinary night becomes a horrifying struggle for survival as they do their best to get out of town alive.

Trailer on previous post.

For Wonderland is no ordinary place and the characters that populate it are quite unlike anybody young Alice has ever met before. AMBER HEARD - SCREAM QUEEN...and what a set of lungs they are!!!

Amber Heard is a hot property these days, mainly due to her amble charms and those eyes. With a dozen or so movies under her belt, several more popping up next year, and with no problems with on screen nudity I can see her going far.

And with a good portion of her movies falling into a horror genre (or there abouts) I think Miss HEARD is definitely the newest scream queen of 2009.

Enjoy the pics.

WHAT THE FRAKK??!!??

While browsing the web I stumbled across some of QMX's newest little gems......animated maquettes of two iconic characters from SYFY's Battlestar Galactica.

I love these things. Staight to EBAY for me to find them!!!

Oh, and another one I just found....Jayne COBB "little damn hero"........I love serenity so this is a must for any fan.

Please note QMx.................FREEBIES ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
: )

CHRISTMAS LOOKS GRIM.....BUT GREAT.

Usually we think of roaring fires and Santa Claus when the Christmas season rocks round. The cinema usually has animated chipmunks and something involving moppets playing for the kids..............not this year. One of the most bleak and depressing movies FINALLY gets a release date this Christmas....THE ROAD.

Now rather than being depressing due to dire acting and a story that plays out like a 3 year old has just written it, It's depressing on purpose. It's the end of the world and a father and son fight to stay alive when everything around them is either dead, dying, or trying to kill whats left.

Not your usually festive movie, but I reckon this is going to end 2009 with an apocalyptic bang....and if that wasn't enough 2010 seems to be taking the "END OF THE WORLD" and zombie theme, which has dominated 2009, and releasing a movie named "THE CRAZIES".

THE CRAZIES is a remake of a 70's horror movie by the master George Romero, but rather than go for the full on zombie movie (which i think we've seen a lot of recently) they've gone down a more realistic route and used the horrors that people do and made the "zombie" in the film more of a metaphor......which kinda makes it more brutal and vicious than a stumbling blood covered movie zombie. Timothy OLYPHANT and Rahda MITCHELL star as residents of a small town that come under the effects of a chemical that makes everyone go mental and start killing.

I'm a horror nut, so both movies look awesome in their unique way....her are the trailers...and a pic of the very sexy Rahda MITCHELL.

Enjoy.

AVATAR....STEAMING TURD, OR THE NEXT BIG THING?

I just caught the new AVATAR trailer whilst at the cinema watching LAW ABIDING CITIZEN (which is a bloody awesome movie; Gerrard the sins of your performance in GAMER are forgiven) and it looks awesome on the big screen.

I know Mr Cameron has a reputation for spending far too much money and coming up with a massive load of crap, but I think he might have just pulled this one out of the bag. The cast look great, the special effects are awesome, and as long as the story is good this should be well worth a look.

Enjoy the trailer.

Kryptonian's Get Swine Flu Too & Our New Forum!

As you've probably noticed there has been a severe lack of posts lately... Unfortunately even though I've given Dark Knight the ability to post his own stuff, I myself have been laid out with the dreaded Swine Flu for the last 8 or 9 days. When I did the last post about the Stargate Atlantis/ Universe debate I was suffering a little, but then it kicked in with a vengeance. First the PC dies, then I get Swine Flu... not my time at the mo huh?! Me the missus and my youngest daughter all got it and dealt with it for 6 days before we went to the doc, who then said it was too late to administer Tamiflu or give antibiotics etc. What? Yeah, so we've dealt with it all by ourselves with Boots own cold and flu tablets and a lot of water and rest.

Anyway, I'm getting over it now finally, I just have the mother of all coughs to contend with, so I'll be posting the huge wad of stuff I've been building up recently in the next couple of days.

One thing I'd like to point out is that I created a new forum for the blog today. No reason to do it really but I thought that frequent visitors or members could jump on there and talk about just about anything and not be limited to the chatbox or comment box parts of this blog. It seems a lot of visitors have some interesting things to say and I've love to see some interactivity.

Please feel free to visit the forum and start some new threads. It's completely open for you to talk about whatever you want but excessive swearing, advertisements or the promotion of illegal content etc will not be tolerated.

Hope you use it, and enjoy it. You can visit the forum by clicking the link on the top right of the main page or by clicking HERE.

Posts coming asap!

The Stargate Atlantis/ Universe Debate... Burning Issue!

Even though I'm suffering a terrible case of what I can only presume is a form of the flu (not man-flu I can assure you) I thought I'd pop on and see what new comments have been left recently... And guess what I found? Almost every comment has been left on the post for the proposed Stargate Atlantis movie "Extinction" which was originally due out this year. People are angry at Atlantis' cancellation and at SGU for stepping in and being crap... I've been playing Devil's advocate and having my own say as I love SGU, but it seems there are quite a few fans out there who really want to speak their mind on the subject, positive or negative, and I thank you all for that.

You can find the original post HERE if you're interested in reading the 50 or so comments that have been posted since July. I was actually going to post a reply again tonight and then the stupid blog advisor popped up and said I'd waffled on for too long and had to shorten my entry. "Sod that, I'll create a new post, just for this" I thought. So here it is below. My latest reply to the blog visitors who have commented on, what seems to be, the biggest debate we've ever had on this site.

Let's try and cover a few of the replies.

Number 1: Is there actually going to be a SGA DVD movie called "Extinction" in 2009/ 2010?

Answer. No, it doesn't look like it anymore. Unfortunately due to a number of factors this movie will not be made... at least anytime soon. As you may or may not know MGM has unfortunately run into some major money issues during the recent recession and will either go under or be bought out, meaning that proposed projects under their banner will be cancelled (or at least heavily delayed) in the future. Syfy are looking at newer stuff such as their record breaking Warehouse 13 series, which starts filming its second series in March 2010 and are more than happy with the current ratings for SGU. Pardon the pun but an Atlantis movie is now "dead in the water".

And here's the major kicker for all you SGA lovers/ SGU haters out there: EXTINCTION (or whatever they end up calling it) WOULD HAVE ONLY BEEN MADE BASED ON THE VIEWING NUMBERS FOR STARGATE: UNIVERSE! Well, technically the SGU statistics added to the SG-1 DVD sales figures in early 2009, but you get what I'm saying. If you boycotted SGU and didn't watch it you probably harmed your chances of getting an SGA movie. Not that this really matters now as I don't think there'll be a chance in hell of it getting made... ;(

Number 2: Will SGU be cancelled and SGA brought back for the fans?

Answer: Whether Stargate fans like it or not SGU is currently going really well and has a set fan base that secures its future on the air. Should that fall at all (like Fringe and Flash Forward have done recently) then there may be some serious reconsideration. Only time will tell. As a big fan of SGU I hope it does continue, it interests me more each week and as soon as we get out of the "origin" phase that we're still seeing I think it'll be essential sci-fi viewing. Remember, if you don't like the series don't watch it. No one is holding you down and forcing you to watch the show. I know you all simply wish the producers would listen to what the majority of the public want but unfortunately that's not how things work and they obviously believed SGA had run its full course when it was cancelled. Yes it is a damn shame it's gone (I've been watching it myself almost every night this week on Sky 2) but it is gone. And it looks like that's for good now. I only hope they have the ability to do the movie in the future and don't just give up.

Number 3: Why do we need a sci-fi show that is more like reality (or Battlestar Galactica) than an actual sci-fi fantasy show?

Answer: Well, we don't actually need anything. The world wouldn't stop turning if we didn't have sci-fi... Yeah it would be f-ing boring, as sci-fi is pretty much all I watch on t.v., but you get what you're given and have to like it or lump it, we don't get to choose. Anything that gets created and shown on t.v. is a gift, if you turn that gift down then that's your decision. Reading the comment left on the first post it's clear that SGU has left a bad taste in people's mouths. Battlestar was a multiple award winning t.v. series, I mean the Wiki page just showing the awards it received and was nominated for is huge, and it's obvious that people will find similarities between BSG and SGU because of their concept, content and style. I've said it before but that was probably their intention! Bottom line - BSG made money. If you didn't like Battlestar it stands to reason that you might not like SGU.

I personally think that the franchise is taking the Star Trek route. The original Star Trek series and movies can be considered to be the Roland Emmerich Stargate movie, solidifying the plot device and characters in the sci-fi community consciousness. The Next Generation is SG-1 with a basic "explore the universe via a not yet possible technological device" (The Enterprise and the Stargate itself) expanding the history, the characters and the humour with a fresh new look. Deep Space Nine is Atlantis with a solitary outpost space station teetering on the brink of imminent disaster each week with enemies and allies being forged each season. And finally Voyager is SGU. A group of people stranded immeasurable distances from home on a space ship (Voyager and Destiny) with no apparent way to get home and personal human emotions and stresses sometimes being at the heart of the episodes. With Enterprise (the series not the ship) you could possibly say that was Stargate Infinity, the doomed animated series that was utter kack and very unwanted by fans of the franchise. I liked Enterprise but many, many fans didn't!

And to answer the other part of that question, the "reality" bit, well we've had two Stargate shows with mind blowing crazy sci-fi outlandishness. They lasted a total of 15 years (adding them together end to end, not how long they ran, and not including the ongoing DVD movies) and we're still guaranteed yet another SG-1 movie in the next two years regardless, so it's not all dead yet. The creators of SGU have now broken the mold and gone more adult/ real, but it's still sci-fi. The original fans or SG-1 are now roughly 12 years or so older and by looking at the age range of those who sat around me at the 2007 and 2008 SG-1 talks in San Diego they were all in their 30's, 40's and even 50's! I didn't see any kids (although the event is more for teenagers and over I suppose). The SG demographic probably conveys an older audience and therefore they stepped up to the plate with a daring and risky attempt to give those fans something they'd now love and connect with on a more personal basis. It worked with me and I know for sure it worked on a load of my mates, and a load of you that visit this blog. Unfortunately it alienated the rest with a vengeance! But hey, everyone is entitled to their say and their opinion and I know that if I said a show was rubbish there would be an army of fans that would shoot me down in seconds! I mean I gave Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 10/10 when others were panning it and calling it utter tripe. Sometimes I'm easily pleased, with SGU this could also be said!

Number 4: Why didn't they do this, why didn't they do that?

Answer: This question relates to those of you that have mentioned things like Wormhole drives to rescue the stranded crew of Destiny, why Atlantis wasn't fully explored, why the crew in SGU are all whining babies etc etc.

Good questions of course, I mean I sit there watching t.v. programmes every week with the missus and we both always say out loud "hold on a minute, why didn't that do this? Why didn't they just use that, it would have sorted out their situation?". And it's frustrating to those of us that mentally place ourselves in the same position as these people, knowing what devices we would have to hand, given to us in those t.v. show universe's, and seeing those potentially easy solutions getting overlooked. The answer of course would be that you wouldn't have a t.v. show to watch if the situation was sorted that easily! Have you heard of the word "McGuffin"? Or "throw away plot device"? This is what happens in the world of t.v. and movies.

Remember in SG-1 where the Zat (Zatnikatel) Goa'uld stun guns would stun with one shot, kill with two and then totally eliminate an object with the third shot? Well that was one such McGuffin that unfortunately had to be written out of the show because that third Zat shot would have sorted way too many problems SG-1 would face in the future seasons. It worked for what they needed it for and then got thrown out. That's only one such plot hole created and then disposed of for the movement of the series, there are dozens more, and not just in the Stargate franchise obviously.

With the Wormhole drive it was specifically mentioned by executive producer for Atlantis 'Paul Mullie' with the following comment:

"A wormhole drive is just that -- a drive that sends the ship through a wormhole, like a person stepping through an active gate. The advantage being that you don't 'travel' through hyperspace for hours on end. You get de-molecularized, or whatever you want to call it, and then spit out at the other end a few seconds later. It's basically instantaneous, which is why I needed it as a device in ['Enemy At the Gate']. Some people have complained that it was a bit of a deus ex-machina, to which I don't really have much of a defense.

"At one point, Brad was thinking about using this as a set-up for a similar drive in Stargate Universe, but he's since changed his mind. But since it IS set up now, Joe and I do intend to use it as part of the story for the Atlantis movie."

With issues like these you just have to bite the bullet and go with what you're seeing and know that you'll always find problems like this, purposefully or not. Lost for instance is littered with incongruities and "but hold on" moments and it doesn't reduce my love of that show.

With the exploration of Atlantis (and now the Destiny) you have to imagine that the creators had to presume they'd have maybe 10 seasons to play with (based on SG-1's run and popularity) so exploring their home base was always going to left for filler episodes where they couldn't think of anything more exciting outside the base to make up a good story. Little did they know that they'd only get 5 seasons with no prior warning of getting shut down. A little mystery will always be held back on any show and with Atlantis it was the city itself. The same thing is now happening on SGU with the massive size of Destiny holding many, many secrets. Some of the best episodes from SGA mind you were gained from such discoveries based solely on a new room found the first few minutes. "The Tao of Rodney" springs to mind. The one where they find a room with an Ancient device that zaps Rodney and gives him superpowers... Frickin excellent episode, one of my all time favourites. Technically SGU have just found a room with a device that has some mystery potential, but if you haven't seen that episode yet I won't say any more. I'm sure the exploration of Atlantis was planned for the later seasons and it's most definitely one of the major plot devices for SGU going forward, so we'll see.

As to why they're all whining and not getting on with it: The point of SGU so far is to show that these specific people that are doing most of the whining or having psychological breakdowns in one way or another are the people that weren't supposed to be in this situation and just aren't suited for it in any way. I mean it's not even really a 'mission' that they could have prepared for as they never knew what was on the other end of the Icarus Stargate when they were forced to go through it at the last minute. Most of those people probably thought they'd be home for tea when they went to work that morning, not traversing the stars uncontrollably on the brink of death for the foreseeable future! Yes there are scientists, soldiers and strong willed bureaucrats on board but most people turn to useless piles of crap when their world's are turned upside down, their control and their comforts are lost and they're separated from their loved ones.

Have you never been p'd off when your bus was late? When you've been stranded in an airport when your plane was delayed? When you've been sat at a family get together with certain people you can't stand? Imagine that tenfold with the fear of death, the hatred of certain people that you can't get away from, over-active libidos, the loss of friends, fear of the unknown etc etc, the list goes on. Even the hardest soldier who's seen the worst in people and life would have a hard time coping in the situation the Destiny crew are facing in the series. Personally I feel like I connect more with the SGU characters than most on other shows. Some of the stuff we're seeing actually happens to some of us and it strikes a chord, sci-fi show or not, and it's great for me and certain others to experience. The cast is more-than-capable rather than being outstanding and the special effects are so far born of a recessional period in our history, but things like that should change and evolve if the show is given time to do so. And I don't care about that at the moment as I love it for what it currently is.

If you hate SGU so be it. No one will be able to change your mind, you know what you like and what you like is what you know. You might like certain meals all the time and not try different things when they're offered. Sometimes if you do try something new you'll think it's not to your liking, but then it grows on you and you want to have it again. Sometimes you'll simply spit it out and think it's the worst thing you've ever tasted and never go back to it. It's all down to personal preference and we are all built differently. SGU is sci-fi Marmite, you either love it or you hate it. I hate Marmite, but love SGU!
