Torchwood: Children Of Earth - Afterthoughts *SPOILERS*

Did anyone here watch Torchwood: Children of Earth last week?

If you didn't you missed some of the best TV to have ever been broadcast on the British airwaves... It was, quite simply, stunning television and a remarkably tense and emotional five evenings for a fan like myself.

First of all I have to point out that as a dedicated fan of both Dr. Who and Torchwood I was mighty p****d to find out last year that in 2009 we'd only get five full episodes of each... Dr. Who being spread accross the year and Torchwood having only a five night run, a miniseries rather than a full quota of episodes. I have to admit now that the choice to do this with Torchwood paid off big time with what was probably the most gripping set of episodes of sci-fi I've ever watched.

Torchwood is the sexually obsessed older sibling of the more child orientated Dr. Who and everyone knows that. In the very first episode there was softcore sex and violence and that theme carried on, growing more intense and crazy right up until the end of the second series. Writer Russell T Davies isn't afraid of offending, he's not afraid of killing off major players, and he's never been afraid of putting Torchwood's characters through Hell to get to where he wants to go with the story, but Jesus Christ did Children of Earth kick all that up a notch.

*SPOILERS*

First of all Russell managed to pull one of the most naturally scary topics from his writing hat and infuse real, chilling terror into it: The abduction of your children...

As a parent of two young girls the main theme of disgusting, ultra-powerful aliens coming down to Earth and demanding 10% of Earth's child population, and then the governments having to bow down and actually action that demand, was sickening and truly scary when you thought about it. Watching the actors portray the emotions that most people would actually feel in that situation was mesmerising. Peter Capaldi's character John Frobisher, as an example, was amazing in this regard and his final scene where he makes the ultimate sacrifice to prevent his family from going through the suffering that lays ahead was gut wrenching and very well executed by director Euros Lyn. Even the scenes where the children are uncontrollably talking for the aliens, counting down their arrival, or all screaming at the end, is chilling but again well done. The question, should you ever want to ask yourself, would be "what would you do in that situation". The worst possible answer that comes back to you from Children of Earth is "There is nothing you can do...".

Apart from the main theme above the way that Lyn presented that actual single alien, in this case the '456' as they're called, was excellent too. All too often do we see silly makeup or floppy rubber suits but here we never got to really see the nemesis that threatened our world. Hidden in a tank full of gaseous mist the only things we got to see were the tip of it's head/s and the child connected to it's body later on (when we find out the 456 want our children as drugs, the chemicals children have inside them stimulate the 456). By doing this for the entire 5 episodes we are on the edge of our seats throughout, being more scared of what we can't see than what we can. Little touches like the occasional green splurges and the delayed answers added to the tension and when the alien finally shows its hand by releasing a deadly virus when p'd off, the audience feels the fear and helplessness that faces those involved.

Now the 456 may have been quite effective but one thing really did shock me, and probably every other viewer watching, and that was the death of Ianto Jones. Yes, unfortunately yet another Torchwood employee popped his clogs and it was a truly emotional moment. All five episodes were pretty emotional and the main cast did a bloody excellent job of conveying that. Even when Jack and the Hub are blown to pieces and you know he'll come back you still feel gutted through the reactions and the acting of Gwen and Ianto, and wonder what's going to happen next. I guess the best word to sum up that theme throughout is "TENSE". There was screaming, running, crying, panic, depression, shock and anger on a scale I've never seen on Torchwood before. It's like they were told this was their absolute final outing and they had to give it their all and go out in a blaze of glory. Granted Torchwood isn't Hollywood level TV, but last week I think we out-shone most of the sci-fi TV the US has to offer anyway.

The inclusion of new characters like Lois Habiba (a potential new Torchwood employee), Jack's daughter and grandson, and even Ianto's sister and her family was very welcome and beefed up the tense and emotional scenes that could have been flatter had they not involved people the main characters were linked to in some way.

Even the way everything was left, after the 456 were defeated, and with only Jack and Gwen remaining from the original team, then Jack running off into deep space supposedly never intending on returning, leaves you wondering just how the Hell they'll continue into a fourth series... if they do at all. If they decided not to this would be a fitting ending for sure!

There were some standout moments in the five episodes and here are just a few of mine in no particular order:

Finding out that Jack has a daughter and grandson.
Jack choosing to sacrifice the life of his own grandson to save 10% of the planet's children.
Gwen finding out she's pregnant.
Finding out the true objective of the 456 was to take children to use them for drugs.
Ianto being killed.
The Hub being blown up and Jack along with it.
Jack reforming his entire body from a bag of minor body parts.
Jack being encased in concrete as an alternative to killing him.
John Frobisher's final extreme act to protect his family.
Bridget Spear's becoming a turncoat.
The amount of times Jack was killed in five episodes.
How much I liked Cush Jumbo's character 'Lois Habiba' (fit too!).
The revelation that Jack was involved in the 1965 child handover to the 456.
PC Andy Davidson choosing to join in the scrap against the army to save the children.
Steven Carter's death and his mother's reaction. (Jack's grandson and daughter)

I would like to point out one minor thing that was a tad naughty: Have you seen the 2007 Thomas Jane movie 'The Mist'? Well if you have you'll notice that there are a couple of similarities between that film and Children of Earth, I think I know where Russell T Davies got his inspiration. Most noticeably the 456 being more scary in the mist where you can't see them (not a direct rip off but obviously the same concept) and the ultimate sacrifice scene where Frobisher kills his family, just like the devastating end to The Mist. OK so he kills himself too where Thomas Jayne doesn't, but you get the idea.

Other than that it was a week of TV well worth watching and I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I personally enjoyed it. Go BBC!!!

Ryan Reynolds Snags Green Lantern!

Thank **** for that... It's now official that Ryan Reynolds, the soon to be Deadpool fan favourite, has snagged the role of Hal Jordan in the new live action 2011 Green Lantern movie.

I'd heard last week that execs were having a hard time choosing between a few different actors including Chris Pine (Star Trek 2009), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Justin Timberlake... Yes that's what I said Justin-frickin-Timberlake, but finally Reynolds won out and is now set to don the emerald power ring of Oa.

It's a shame that he didn't get chosen for 'The Flash' as I think his unique acting talent would have supported that role far better than as Hal Jordan (I still think Nathan Fillion could have nailed Hal much better, but maybe he's too old now) but I'm glad it's Reynolds over anyone else. It'll be strange seeing him as the B-listing Marvel character Deadpool and then the A-listing DC character Green Lantern, but as I'm a fan of his work I'm not going to complain one little bit.

The first I actually heard of Reynolds getting the part was when Jon Favreau Twittered that Green Lantern had visited the Iron Man 2 set... He'd obviously dropped by to see Scarlett and told everyone the good news! Then a little while after the internet was displaying the news.

Hopefully he can shake off a little of his natural humour and get a bit more focused on playing a hardcore action superhero that is needed for a good lantern movie. Now all we need to hear is that characters like Kilowog and the other lanterns are gonna feature and I'll be at my maximum geek level!

Just to get the old GL juices flowing here's the trailer again for the upcoming animated movie for Green Lantern: First Flight

Blade Movie Prequel Series Focusing On Deacon Frost?

Yep, it does seem a little strange but it's been confirmed that original Blade movie director Stephen Norrington and original vampire villain Stephen Dorff (Deacon Frost) have co-created an idea for a new movie trilogy based primarily on Dorff's vampire character.

Although not a project Norrington is thinking of doing until he finishes his Crow movie remake, the first new movie is thought to be set for production next year.

No more information is available at this time but to be brutally honest I don't care. I'm just not interested in this idea at all, as I wasn't with Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (which for me was bloody awful). I love vampire movies and I love the first two Blade movies (not so hot on the third) but steering the story away from its main protagonist seems like a very bad move and an attempt to rejuvenate the flailing careers of both Norrington and Dorff, riding on the popularity wave of vampire movies and TV series' over the last few years.

If that is the case then they need to stop this idea in its tracks. I can't see this being a hit, or even getting to the second movie without it being straight to DVD, but I could be wrong...

Baywatch The Movie Going Ahead?????

Whoah, whoah, whoah... Wait a goddamn minute... are you serious? A BAYWATCH movie actually being greenlit?

Stretch Armstrong and TJ Hooker were bad enough, but Baywatch? This should not be real news, this should be April the 1st news were people actually find it funny... this is not funny.

It seems that after the new president of Paramount took over recently he stated that a movie that he wanted fast tracked into production would be Baywatch. An original script was written for this back in 2005, focusing on a serious action movie featuring bronzed muscle men and silicone breasted females running in slow motion (joking about the slow motion), but it seems that a re-write has been actioned and the new movie will now be a comedy in the Police Academy vein. The new theme has two new unlikely lifeguard candidates who have to try to fit in with the buff bodies that were so prevalent in the old 90's series... No, I won't stand for it!!!

As stated on a few other sites: Baywatch should remain a memory of the 90's camp and ludicrous TV and should not be resurrected in this way. Let the old dog die off gracefully... please! Don't get me wrong, I watched Baywatch religiously back in the day, I had a serious obsession on Erika Eleniak and then Pamela Anderson, and I honestly did like the series. Doing this will tarnish those sweet sweet memories I have... ;)

Again, just for fun, here are two of the opening sequences for the old series. The first from season 1 with Erika and co and then the later series with Pamela, Yasmine, Gina-lee etc and the more familiar music.

New Mortal Kombat Movie To Start Filming This September?

Yep, that's right, a new Mortal Kombat movie is supposedly set to start production this September through Warner Bros.

WB recently acquired a large portion of Midway Games' assets and with that purchase were the rights to Mortal Kombat. Soon after the announcement was made the former actor/ martial artist, Chris Casamassa, who played Scorpion in the original two movies, stated during an interview with the SGV Tribune, a newspaper out of California, that he's set to start filming on the third movie this September...

No-one seems to have heard about this whatsoever, so for now it's all pie in the sky, but with WB obtaining the rights and Chris saying he's set to return to his role, will we be seeing another MK movie in 2010? And will it be a big budget reboot by WB or a straight to DVD crap-fest? Only time will tell.

I've played all the MK video games and I still think that the second game is the best, I was unbeatable at MK back in the day and really loved it, but the franchise went downhill and even teaming up the characters with the DC Universe heroes and villains didn't bring it back to life for me... Shame, maybe this movie will be good... Then again maybe not. All I can hear in my head now is "FINISH HIM!"

The 'Foot Clan' Returning For New Live Action Turtles Movie?

I posted the news a while back that a new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was heading our way in 2011 but now we've got our first piece of solid news about it.

Hollywood recently held an open casting call for martial artists to audition for the new film for a part as a member of the 'Foot Clan'. The casting call is asking for anyone 14 years old or over so it looks like they'll be a few young clan members in the new movie battling against the likes of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo and Splinter. The Foot Clan are back baby!

I've always had a little obsession with the Turtles ever since the original comics, right through to the cartoons, movies and toys, so I'm pretty syked that a new version is being made. (Is it sad that I know the Turtle Power song below word for word and even performed it for my music classmates back in secondary school?... Dear God what was I thinking?)

Just for fun here's that main theme song from the original movie by 'Partners in Kryme'!

Amazing Modern Vinatge Artwork By Tom Whalen

While perusing the scifiwire website the other day I came across some stunning artwork by 'Modern Vintage' artist Tom Whalen. The initial link led to abduzeedo.com but when I delved a little deeper I found Tom's deviantART gallery page HERE

This is the kind of artwork that I love. I own a fair amount of posters, pictures and original artwork covering the various areas of the entertainment industry, but I'd love to have a few of these on my wall too. The Marvel and DC pictures alone are amazing, let alone the huge amount of other movies that Tom has covered in his collection. Here are just a select few of my personal faves...

If you're a fan of amazing artwork then you can also visit these two fantastic sites forwarded to me by The Emerald Knight last week.

District 9 - Newest Trailer

Here is the new trailer for the upcoming sci-fi movie District 9.

The first trailers and images were vague and didn't show a lot, but this one kicks it into a higher gear and makes it look pretty damn cool. It's definitely one I'm not going to miss!

Cameron Diaz In Talks For Green Hornet

News from Entertainment Weekly last week stated that Cameron Diaz is currently in talks for a role in Seth Rogan's upcoming Green Hornet movie.

EW stated:

"A deal hasn't been sealed yet, but sources tell EW that she is in early talks for the role. Her reps at CAA declined comment. Michel Gondry is set to direct the film based on a script by Rogen and his writing partner, Evan Goldberg. Shooting is supposed to begin shortly, with a release date already set for July 9, 2010".

I'm not sure if I'm excited about this movie yet and seeing as it's more of a comedic take on the character and his partner Kato it's something that could go badly wrong. I'm not the biggest Seth Rogan fan, or Cameron Diaz for that matter, but I can never resist a hero-movie of any sort!

We need Cameron to go back to her 'The Mask' days, where she was breathtakingly hot... She's lost that 'je ne sais quoi' that she once had at the start of her career.

Jennifer's Body - Megan fox Pics

For all of those Megan Fox fans out there here's a bunch of images from her new upcoming horror movie 'Jennifer's Body'. Fox plays Jennifer Check a cheerleader who has been newly possessed by a demon and turns into a supernatural killer who specializes in offing her male classmates by feeding on them. Her best friend must kill her, then escape from a correctional facility to go after the Satan-worshiping rock band responsible for the transformation.

I'm really not a horror movie fan but I have no doubt that I'll watch this movie at some point, probably on DVD... C'mon, it is Megan after all. And think about it, is there any better way to go than being eaten by Megan Fox? Even as a bloodied killer she's still hotter than most girls!

Kickass - New Images

Matthew Vaughn's 'Kickass' movie seems to be gaining a real following from its fan community lately and although its budget isn't Hollywood level and it seems to heading towards a almost indie feel it looks like it could be a thoroughly enjoyable superhero outing.

The studio have just released 3 new images showing an unmasked Aaron Johnson as Dave Lizewski (Kickass), Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Chris D'Amico (Red Mist) and finally comic illustrator John Romita Jr. (left) and Millar on the film's set.

News has also been leaked that the movie will include animated sequences as well as live action, so this could be more interesting than we thought!

Looking forward to it!

Dr. Who's New Foe In 'Waters Of Mars'

David Tennant's next Dr. Who outing is in the special 'Waters of Mars' which will be screened later this Autumn on BBC 1.

The Dr will team up with a feisty female character called Adelaide (played by Lindsay Duncan who starred in BBC2's recent Margaret Thatcher biopic) who is furious when he shows up without an invitation at a base on Mars she is heading.

They both battle a disgusting looking creature called Andy Stone (played by Alan Ruscoe) who has freaky eyes, black lips and a cracked face and also sports the ability to control water, infecting others to become like him.

You can see more in the preview clip and the trailer below... Tennant's time is also up. The Master is coming back to finish the job he started!

News From The Crimson Blur - Thor & Cloverfield 2

A Crimson Blur Post

Ha Ha!

Straight from the toilet and I have some news.

Jessica Biel to play Sif in Thor movie?

I have come across news that the GORGEOUS Jessica Biel is in talks for the 2011 release of Thor! It's been reported that she's been offered the part of Thor's love interest Sif. (Previously reported to have been Natalie Portman) KW
Now Jessica Biel, as we all know, looked hardcore in Blade 3 and on top of that she's a total hunny so it's no surprise to me that she's been approached for this role. She does have the body of a Goddess so this probably explains why I've also heard on the net that she was tipped to play Wonder Woman.
I think this would be a good choice as she has proven fighting skills, shes athletic, handy with weapons and of course beautiful.

Colverfield 2 - First leaked pics?

Now I'm a fan of Cloverfield and was wondering will they every do a sequel?.....Well check out some supposedly leaked photos from the sequel...

I''m hoping this will be a good sequel and I believe it will be, with the likes of producer J.J. Abrams and writer Drew Goddard, who penned Cloverfield, as well as episodes of Lost, Alias, and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Reeves back to direct this will be hopefully better than the first outing.

News From The Dark Knight...

A Dark Knight Post

SMALLVILLE APPARENTLY MAY NOT BE HEADED FOR THE SCRAP HEAP.

According to Justine HARTLEY (Green Arrow), there may be more life in this old dog of a series yet. He announced during an interview that nothing's been decided as to the series' end, and there may be more seasons left for the fans.

I've gotten to the point that I don't really care....this series deserved a trip to the knackers yard 3 seasons ago.......the only shining light has been Hartley, who's green arrow has been great to watch.

Although Laura VANDERVOORT was a great piece of eye candy, she was sadly under-used and poorly written for by the writing staff. Young Miss VANDERVOORT has however landed on her feet with the new 'V' remake coming soon.....can't wait as I love the original series. I would imagine this means Supergirl/Power Girl will not return anytime soon.

CW: Just bin this crap or pull your finger out......focus on the future, which may have to be without SMALLVILLE.

DO WE EXPECT TOO MUCH??

Who's seen PUSH? Hands up anyone?? Hello???

Am I then only one? Well it's about time you went to the video store and rented it, because this movie is a pretty good attempt at an anti-hero superhero movie.

Released with minimal press in early 2009, PUSH stars Chris EVANS, Dakota FANNING, and DJIMMON HUSTON.

A group of young American ex-pats with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities are hiding from a clandestine U.S. government agency. They must utilize their different talents and band together for a final job enabling them to escape the agency forever

In 1945, Hitler and his Nazis were using experiments on people who were born with special abilities to create an ultra-powerful army. However, the end of the war put a stop to this. What it didn't stop was other countries finding out and setting up their own branches, or divisions. Watchers, for example, are able to see the future in quick flashes and scenes. Movers can move objects and people with their minds. Pushers, on the other hand, can "push" people into believing that certain things are or aren't true (like hypnosis). Bleeders emit high-pitched sonic screams that make ears bleed, while Stitches can disassemble or reassemble any scar tissue. Sniffs can take any object and get a history of where it's been in relation to its owner, while Wipers can erase any amount of a persons memory. There are also Shifters; people who make objects appear to be something else (like illusionists, only more realistic), and Shadows, people whose ability is basically to block the effectiveness of other clairvoyants

Good premises (If not seen before in some form or another) and a good director which leads a smart movie, which is different enough to set this one apart.

I've heard nothing but criticism about this movie's faults, but are we all just being too fussy..............just watch this movie and enjoy the fantasy and action.

The DVD is out now. £12.00 in ASDA ..........bargin!!!!!

Here's the trailer:

X-MEN FIRST CLASS - NEW MOVIE ON ITS WAY

ROTTENTOMATOES.COM reported the following about the new movie....we'll see what happens with this one.

#1 X-MEN: FIRST CLASS TO STAR CYCLOPS, JEAN GREY AND BEAST

X-Men franchise producer Laura Shuler-Donner clarified this week one of the big mysteries and confusions about the upcoming X-Men: First Class project, although given the title and source material, it shouldn't have been a mystery at all. The confusion started when Variety a while back speculated that the movie would focus on the young mutants from the previous movies, like Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Iceman, etc. However, the actual X-Men: First Class comic specifically focuses on the five canon characters who were actually Charles Xavier's first students: Cyclops, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Beast, Iceman and Angel. Anyway, Ms. Shuler-Donner said, "It is the first class of Xavier's school, way back when, so it's young Scott, young Jean, young Beast, and that'll be really fun." Given that we know from the many commercials that Cyclops is a character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it appears that X-Men: First Class could be designed to stay within in the existing franchise's continuity, since what Laura Shuler-Donner did not say is that Angel or Iceman will be appearing in the movie (since they were retconned into being much younger in the movies).

So, the question I would have now as a fan is whether X-Men: First Class will just focus on those three characters, or might other mutants be brought in as Xavier's earliest students? Some possibilities that I might suggest are Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (who would tie in nicely to the upcoming X-Men Origins: Magneto), Mimic (the first character added to the team after the original five) and perhaps some of the 1970's X-Men who haven't yet appeared in the movies, like Banshee, Sunfire and Thunderbird.

More Star Wars From Jedi Master Nads...

Jedi Master Nads is back again with a few Star Wars related items this week.

New Slave Leia Action Figure Coming Soon

As you're all aware by now Jedi Master Nads has a wee obsession with Slave Leia, aka Princess Leia in a gold bikini, and collects just about anything he can find that represents her in that costume. This new Leia action figure sculpt from The Legacy Collection - Return of the Jedi Wave 10 (formally wave 8) is unique in that not only do you get the standard articulated figure but also an interchangeable lower body with pre-posed seated/ lounging legs reminiscent of her pose on Jabba's sail barge.
I have to admit to not really being a fan of this new figure from what we can see here (image provided by Sandtroopers.com) but I'm sure it'll be in JMN's collection before we know it!

Star Wars - Carrie Fisher's New Co-Star Sick After Intimate Scenes!

Most Star Wars geeks would probably hack off their own arm to get an intimate moment with ex Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher but recently Eddie Hogg, Fisher's co-star in new movie 'White Lightning' embarrassed himself slightly when he threw up after one of their sex scenes! Luckily it wasn't because he found her unattractive in her 'older-age' but due to the fact that the re-filming of one of their scenes where he drunk from a Champagne bottle had to be re-shot a number of time and he ended up consuming 3 whole bottles by the end of it... Honking his guts up just after!
