Doctor Who- The Eleventh Hour review!!

The introduction of the Eleventh doctor comes zooming onto the screen as the story picks right up from the End of Time Part Two with the tardis seemingly on fire and heading for a wallop of a landing.
I found it strange that the tardis was hurling itself over London and then somehow goes back in time to a small town called Leadworth but I guess if a time machine was malfunctioning and about to explode then anything could happen.
Honestly though, I was so ingrossed in what was going to happen that I didn't really wonder for long.
The tardis then lands in the back garden of a little scottish girl -Amelia Pond's house where she asks Santa if he can send someone to fix the mysterious crack in her wall.
My immediate response to her was that this little girl has got some attitude and an actual personality where she's brave and not afraid to take risks.
As she discovers the doctor, I think the doctor's first line to another human since his regeneration is, 'Can I have an apple'? just sums up his incarnation perfectly because he's this intelligent, mad and powerful alien who at that moment all he wants is an apple, it's just brilliant!
Once they get inside, the doctor goes through multiple craving stances with him not quite knowing what this renegeneration likes but it seems he has unusual tastes with his fish fingers and custard.
However, I have to say I tried them last night and they did taste delicious with their sweetness, the combination was surprisingly yummy.
After their introductions, Amelia tells the doctor about the crack in her wall and there the doctor becomes intrigued and manages to deduct that it's two pieces of space and time that should never have touched.
I think after four series sometimes ideas can become repetitive but not on Who, I thought the idea of a huge eyeball and the notion that a simple crack in a wall could helm an imaginative sci fi alien in it.
I have a crack in my wall and after watching this episode I have always looked at it differetly and imagining what could be behind it or what was the cause of it.
With the tardis needing to rebuild, the doctor promises Amelia he'll be back in five minutes to which results in him being gone twelve years and discovering his little Amelia had grown considerably since thier last encounter and has taken to the role of a kissogram.
I hadn't heard of this before or even knew it was a thing but when I watched the scene where Amy (not Amelia) explains to the doctor what a kissogram actually is, I found that to be one of the best comedy moments in the story.
Karen Gillan's portrayal of Amelia is so mad it's like I've been hit in the face with a burst of personality when her mood changes from being sombre to locking the doctor's tie into a car door because she can't handle the fact that he's real and that the world was ending. She's awesome.
I found it strange seeing Rory as his clumsy and sensitive self but it was great seeing how he has grown and become braver and more confident.
Prisoner Zero was an interesting and scary new alien that I think was a threat but one that the doctor knew he could defeat and it was nice that it didn't detract from the doctor forming a bond with Amy and discovering who he was.
Going back to the beginning of the Eleventh Doctor's story I think he was a lot scarier without having to look it as he very calmly experiments with his new outfit and orders the Atraxi back to Earth to tell them that the Earth is protected.
This moment for me really showed the audience that this was the same alien that they saw in the End of Time but ultimately still holds the same beliefs and love for the Earth.
Some of the best moments for me in the Matt Smith's era with its full blown pace, witty and clever story, funny and strange characters and a new doctor that's like a child and old man all in one!

Child of Light - Lindsey Stirling video and trailer

Many of you would have probably already heard of Lindsey Stirling thanks to previous covers and medleys she's performed before such as Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda and Lord of the rings, all with beautiful videos and her new one for Child of Light is no exception, dressed in a number of Princess Aurora's different outfits from the game Lindsey plays her heart out to an orchestral version of the title song for her new album "Shatter me" and it fits so well with the theme for the game itself that not that many people didn't seem to notice it wasn't a cover form the game itself. The video is beautiful and something you should certainly check out, especially if you've been umm-ing and ahh-ing over weather or not to get the game as this is what finally tipped the scales for me. If you're not quite sure what Child of Light is or want to check out what the game looks like, check out the trailer below and enjoy!

Edge of Tomorrow trailer!

I saw the trailer for this and thought I actually think this could be a fascinating and brilliantly shot film and not just another hollywood boo hah!
It's about Tom Cruise's character who ends up in a time loop where he keeps getting killed in a war with an alien race. I think the concept of time may be explored in this, let's hope!

First look trailer for "Galavant"

What I think can only be described as a mix of The Princess Bride and Robin Hood: Men in tights is ABC's new show (coming soon!) Galavant. The story of of a knight who finds true love...and loses it. There's comedy, music and fairytale, what's not to love? Created, written, and executive produced by Dan Fogelman (Cars, Bolt and Tangled) with co-executive producers Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Tangled, Hercules and many many more) and Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid) who are also the shows songwriters and composers. This will be a full TV show and run for (at least) a season, although it's stated as "coming soon" it seems very likely will be aired in the US from mid-December to the end of  February to fill the gap between the first and second half of season four of Once Upon a Time. It looks lighthearted, fun and cheesey but able to laugh at itself (much like the aforementioned Princess Bride and Robin Hood: Men in tights) and I'll certainly be watching this myself! I'm a little concerned about how it will fill a season with a consistent level of laughs, songs and storyline but I hope they manage to pull it off, even if it only runs for the one season, much like OUAT in Wonderland which was rounded off perfectly in that one season. I'll keep you updated as we get more information but for now, sit back and watch the trailer. I think King Richard may already be my favorite character!

Magic Monday: Blast from the Past Review - Doctor Who (1996)

Happy Magic Monday readers and welcome to my first Blast from the past Review! Starting with an old favorite of mine, the 1996 Doctor Who (TV) Movie!

This British/American/Canadian produced TV Movie was released in 1996, first airing on CITV in Canada, followed by BBC One in the UK and the Fox Network in the US. It was created as a test pilot of sorts to revive the Doctor Who TV show that had become dormant in 1989, with this potential new version being catered to an American audience. Although it did fairly well in the UK it sadly flopped in the US and was never picked up to continue, Paul McGann's doctor however continued to feature in numerous Doctor Who audio dramas by Big Finish and for many helped bridge the gap until the relaunching of the series by the BBC in 2005. Although these audio dramas weren't at first thought to be canon many McGann fans were overjoyed when the short "Night of the Doctor" was aired as a minisode leading up to the the 50th anniversary special marking the second televised appearance of McGann as the eighth Doctor and with the uttering of a few names, (specifically the names of many of his previous companions featured in said audio dramas) before regenerating, they are now believed to be officially part of the Doctors timeline.

Anyway...
This film was my first proper glimpse into the world of Doctor Who, I'd seen an episode here and there (mainly Pertwee and Davidson thanks to re-runs on "Gold") but I found a copy of the television movie on video at a boot sale for 50p, I was about 12/13 at the time and thought, "why not!" I absolutely fell in love and was so sad when I realised there was no more of this Doctor I'd grown to love.

The film is set a few years after release on the eve of New Years Eve, the Doctor is escorting the masters remains from Skaro when, the Master (in ooze form...ahh gotta love the 90's?) manages to escape from his containment and causes the Tardis to malfunction and thus making an emergency landing on Earth. Exiting the Tardis, the Doctor (still played by the 7th regeneration, Sylvester McCoy) is caught in a gang fight and shot. A young boy that survives escorts him in an ambulance to the hospital where the Doctors write off the x-rays of his two hearts as a double exposure and accidentally kill him while using a probe to try and find out why his heartbeat is so erratic.

The Doctor regenerates (for the 8th time) into Paul McGann but unfortunately due to the anesthetic in his system when he died keeping him dead for too long, he has no clue who he is or where he's from. While this is happening the Master (is ooze form) manages to find a host in the unwitting ambulance driver Bruce, takes over his body and begins to plan how he will take the Doctors remaining regenerations from so that he may live. As usual the Master's plan also involves destroying the world so the Doctor, with the help of Grace (the doctor who unwittingly caused his death) set about to stop him.

It's a charming little film, although not a Hollywood blockbuster by any standards it's a nice easy film to watch and enjoy. Eric Roberts as Bruce/The Master is absolutely fantastic, he's cold, calculating and brilliant while managing to actually be quite funny at the same time. Paul McGann is really my first Doctor and I love what he brings to the character, his Doctor is supposedly half human (on his mothers side) and it really shows in the way he plays him, although he's of course very clever as the Doctor is, he tends to have a more human quality that a few of the other regenerations lack.

The Tardis itself also got a makeover, changing from the sterile white walls and console to the steam punk meets time lord and mahogany look in the picture above, for me this helped a great deal in showing the scope of inside the Tardis and fit very well. Although the change isn't explained in the film, attempts have been made to do so via the audio adventures.

There are a fair few fans that sadly didn't like the movie, which I can understand as it isn't quite the Doctor Who most know and love but it holds a special place in my heart for bringing me into the crazy world of Doctor Who itself and I'd imagine in some way helped pave the way for the return of the series in 2005. So if you haven't watch it yet, I suggest you do so as Paul McGanns Doctor is just as fun and important as the others. Until next week readers! xx

Is the sonic losing its purpose in life?

Since watching series 7 of Doctor Who I have noticed that in a few adventures when the Doctor needs to use the sonic screwdriver, he points, taps it and then frowns because its not working properly.
I feel like I'm losing my believability in the sonic because whenever a threat appears and the Doctor needs to defend himself and his friends, when that sonic is whipped out I just think, 'The sonic's not going to work is it'?
I have asked Steven Moffet about this in the Doctor Who Magazine but I don't know whether they will pick it for him to answer but I'll have to see.
I mean is there a reason that the sonic doesn't appear to be a scientific instrument anymore? I don't know, this is becoming too intense, I'm being too much of a Who geek!
I must go.......

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D The only light in the darkness review

As the season finale rapidly descends I feel like the last section of episodes have been a lot more devised than others.
This episode really focuses on each individual characters betrayals, loves and beliefs. It has to be my favourite of the series with the team having to under go an epic lie detecter test which enable the faithful viewer to get to know each character in greater depth.
The best lines came from Fitz and Simmons when asked if they were stuck on an island with a box, what would be in it to which Fitz replies 'Simmons' and Simmons replying with 'the TARDIS'.
I revelled in this and laughed at the sheer mention of anything relating to Doctor Who!
Ward's increasing betrayal escalates and Skye ends up discovering the truth about him after she finds the cute Eric dead but takes it in her stride by deciding that she's going to have to find out what he's after which I think really shows she how far her loyalties to SHIELD have grown.
Another geeky reason why this was a huge thumbs up from me was that the guest star was in fact Fred/Illyria from Angel.... OK it was actually Amy Acker but all I could see was Fred, Fred, Fred, FRED!
She played Coulson's lost love; Audrey who didn't have any idea that he was alive, well, why should she. Her telling of their introduction warmed my heart and I felt this was a really nice love between these two that felt very pure and devoted.
I liked the escaped villain whose power enabled him to drain the energy of any object or living thing. The sheer idea of this made his presence quite terrifying as all around him he was shrouded in darkness as he drained the energy from the light.
Fitz's dilemma of whether to admit to Simmons how he feels about her is just so great to watch because I'm not really sure if I want the relationship between them to change due to them being such a compatible pairing.
Suspense, action, emotion, rapid pace and exciting- this is where things become even more epic!
I better hold on to something!

Don't Starve Review and Multiplayer announced!

For those of you who aren't intimately familar with that dread as night begins to fall while you search frantically for a single piece of flint so you can cut down trees and make a fire, for those who have never experienced being chased through a forest by three different swarms of hissing spiders intent on your doom, for those who are yet to know how it feels to watch the flames creep higher and further afield, burning and destroying your base camp, the expensive equipment in it, your food stash and almost every single tree you could possibly reach in the space of a day, even your best and only friend Chester, who loyally carried all your junk for you, is happily bouncing along beside you no more...Welcome to Don't Starve, a game where you fight tooth and nail (sometimes even beards are involved!) to simply survive another day. Don't Starve is "an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic"

Klei promised that Don't Stave would be the best single player game they could make and for me personally this is very true. There's no tutorial of any sorts to go through, the game gives you no real instruction at all and there's something about just being left to your own devices that just makes this game more fun, it doesn't baby you through even your first few nights and it feels like even more of an accomplishment when you see the sun rise in the morning and know you've survived another night in this cruel world. About five minutes later I was savagely killed by wolves. Instead of feeling angry though I just felt more determined to survive for longer, to explore, see and create more things than the previous try, even unlocking new characters with the experience you gain from each previous play through who all have different upsides and downsides.

Although Willow is possibly my favorite character, I always end up starting mass fires!
With it's quirky art style and no nonsense attitude Don't Starve has had a decent fan base ever since it's early access beta release on Steam and it has only grown, with loads of updates and new features such as caves, new items, new powers and new mobs, all included free with the original game purchase. Klei even released the games first paid DLC "Reign of Giants" which came out of Beta and was officially released at the end of April this year which is another new challenge great for experienced players with two new biomes (desert and Deciduous forest), two new seasons (spring and autumn), new ways to die (overheating and the freezing to death before winter even arrives thanks to the new wetness meter and then even if you survive the rainy spring summer is now even more deadly!) as well as new mobs and critters!

Now Klei have announced another exciting new feature that will be a free addition called "Don't Starve Together" that's right folks...Multiplayer is coming! As mentioned it will be a free update like the others but the game itself will be going up in price a smidgen around the time this update will be in alpha, which is more than understandable with the amount of awesome content they've been squeezing in and how far it's come since that early access bet! So I suggest that if you're planning on buying I'd do it now before the price increase. So yes! I mentioned multiplayer! A developer posted on the Klei forums about the topic (which you can go and read here) telling us they're hoping to have it out or at least in beta by late summer, it will allow (at minimum) 2-4 players to play together publicly or privately and will feature most (if not all) of the current features and potentially some new ones too! The Don't Starve website itself also posted a little mini comic strip yesterday as way of announcing the update to readers of the newsletter and the site itself which I will leave with you while you ponder if you could grow as magnificent a beard as our Wilson here.

Buffy review- The Wish

As the premise of this story is Cordelia blaming Buffy for basically everything bad that has happened to her even though the only reason that her supposed friends are giving her evils is because they all happen to think Xander is a loser which by definition is someone who accepts defeat with good or bad grace which in Xander's case may be the fact that he only accepts defeat is because he's a better person than that said person who is inflicting the pain onto him.
My view is that Xander is quite frankly one of the nicest if not the nicest and genuine people who actually goes to Sunnydale High.
What really bugs me in this episode is the fact that Cordelia breaks up with Xander and then whenever she interacts with him she treats him likes he's lower then she is just because he doesn't wear clothes that are considered fashionable and doesn't judge people.
Quite frankly, I think Xander was more suited to Anya because even though she did insult people quite a lot of the time, she isn't really aware that what she's doing is wrong whereas Cordelia knew exactly what she was doing....
Anyway, getting back to the story, I think it was an awesome idea to explore what Sunnydale would have been like if Buffy had never appeared which is such an amazing story to create and write because you get to see alternative realities to the one you are most familiar with which for a fangirl is like a bowl of cookie dough goodness in cult television terms.
The drastic change in the atmosphere is brilliantly conveyed in the background as Cordelia's wish suddenly comes to fruition.
Students are hurrying about looking shaky and scared. Their clothes all dark and dull and to emphasis how different this Sunnydale is, the costume designers decide to give Cordelia a positively blinding blue dress to attract all the terrifying vampires that lurk in the shadows.
Furthermore, the vampires of the town who the majority of them probably survived due to Buffy's lack of presence were rather more disturbing and truly evil as they trapped people in cages and rawly ate some victims in the middle of the street as they knew who dominates the surrounding area.
Willow and Xander becoming vampires was a logical decision as that is probably what would've happened if Buffy wasn't there to save them.
Their relationship was very fascinating to watch as its so different to their comfortable, warm and loyal friendship to this dark, wicked and seductive one which Alyson Hannigan really manages to convey with the evil side of Willow's character with a slight change in tone and an innocent expression she displays like she actually believes she's a  vulnerable young girl.
Buffy's character has become rather military like and I kind of think is this what she would have become like without her friend's influence. I think she would because knowing Buffy I think the friends she had in LA would not be true friends who would stick by her knowing she was a vampire slayer so I believe she would make slaying her mission for life.
The music that accompanies the Wish especially the climatic score has a haunting feel to its tune by its effect to make the atmosphere really brutal and shocking with its operatic swangsong accompanied by the slow motion sequence where The Master kills Buffy and there's nothing that can stop him is really something to be treasured.
The Wish is a cult favourite of mine with its brilliant story arc, exciting and complex characters, unique hilarity and stunning score- all of it makes a phenomenal piece of cult television.

I.LOVE. POWER. RANGERS.

Hi Guys,

With the Free Comic Book Day issue and the announcement of a potential movie franchise having been released today (DEAR GOD YES). I thought I'd make my feelings known. As stated in the title, well as the title, I. LOVE. POWER. RANGERS. I remember watching the very first episode the very first time it aired in the UK. I had all the toys, all the videos and would watch it everyday after school. Power Rangers is what ignited my love for superheroes and therefore made me a geek. I'll admit I stopped watching halfway through Turbo, due to lack of the characters I loved and stupid stories, they got cooked into a pizza for god's sake, but I've got back into it again thanks funnily enough to Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger.

http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/326/2/3/kaizoku_sentai_gokaiger_by_blakehunter-d4gyf3s.jpg
I won't get into Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers today, but yeah Sentai got me back into Power Rangers and I've loved going back over season's I didn't watch and watching the current ones.

My Top 5 seasons are:

  1. Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers (duh!)
  2. Power Rangers Zeo
  3. Power Rangers SPD
  4. Power Rangers Dino Thunder
  5. Power Rangers Wild Force.
Saying that though there only 3 seasons I don't really like, again I'll talk about that later.

It's been going for 21 years and here's hoping for many, many more. GO GO POWER RANGERS.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire teaser trailer!

We've had Fire Red and Leaf Green for the gameboy advance, Heart Gold and Soul
Silver for the DS and now our Pokemon remake for the 3DS consoles are finally here, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire! The Pokemon YouTube channel posted this teaser trailer today!

That's right! Ruby and Sapphire originally released on the gameboy advance are getting the re-make treatment which, if the previous re-makes are anything to go by will sell better than their original releases as old and new Pokemon fans get to visit (and re-visit) the region of Hoenn which has proven to be one of the fan favorites. Sadly this news does look set to dash hopeful rumors of a Hoenn based DLC for the most recent games in the Pokemon series: X and Y. The games are set for release world-wide in November this year. Will you be catching them all?

Magic...Tuesday? Official extended trailer for Gotham!

Hello again readers! I apologise for the lack of a Magic Monday post yesterday but due to some internet problems your Mistress of Magic was left with no broadband! I am however back in full force to give bring you a trailer I think a lot of us have been waiting for and I don't know about you guys but I for one was not disappointed by the trailer posted by Fox themselves. I'm talking of course, about Gotham an "origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told."

So we get to see a young Batman, Catwoman, Penguin, The Riddler and even Poison Ivy as well as Jim Gordan himself! So far from the trailer it looks to be a very well put together show with quality on par with DC's other current TV show Arrow. Fox describes the show as following "one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time."

Directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the "CSI" franchise, "Nikita") the show is set to hit our screens in the fall of this year.

The Twelfth Doctor's weapon of choice - a spoon!

The Doctor's new weapon of choice! HA take that.

Buffy review of Hush

Hey there,

This is a big fan favourite of mine as it presents an almost silent episode so i'ts odd that the uniqueness of Buffy comes from the dialogue but here it's all about the expression and gestures that the characters emphasis.
Also, the monsters that appear are I think the scariest that has appeared on anything ever! There manic smiles, their silent hovering and the fact that they take people's voices to prevent them from screaming so that they can cut out their hearts which rather disturbing and horrifying in itself just creates a terrible fear.
The beginning brings a swarm of brilliant comedy between Giles, Xander, Anya and Spike as they argue over Spike staying in Xander's basement.
The dialogue seems to bounce off them like a tornado of ripping through the scene. I liked the development of Buffy and Riley's relationship and could relate to Buffy as she tells Willow that she becomes nervous and starts babbling.
Overall, this didn't seem to fit within the whole concept of the story but it did enhance the realisation that all the monsters and end of the world happenings always come along in the midst of normal, human challenges, experiences and events.
As the Sunnydale residents realise they have no voices and Giles lady friend happens to catch a glimpse of the Gentlemen that he concludes his suspicions on Fairy Tale monsters which he galiantly presents to the group in the form of graphic drawings and a projector.
Oh, and I have to point out that this is Tara's first appearance which makes me very happy as her adore this woman!
This is the start of an epic parnership which progresses amazingly as Tara and Willow realise how much power they possess when their together. I just want to give them an enormous hug!
As the action relies on the character's expressions and gestures I think this was brilliantly acted because of the way the actors could portray their well established characters just through a look or gesture.
Utterly scary and extraodinary!
