STARGATE UNIVERSE - WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG

So where DID it go wrong for SGU, the newest incarnation of the STARGATE franchise? I guess it lands firmly on the doorstep of the fans.

When SGU was first rumoured and greenlit I was really impressed that the creators had decided to break a mould that was starting to get a little bit tired. We saw that fact when ATLANTIS began to get chopped and changed in an attempt to build the viewership back up. We could all see (and yes you know it's true) that ATLANTIS was a clone of SG1 and was made in the same way, the same pattern, and with the same overall tone......that's where it went wrong.

SG1 was a new, unique blend of SCIFI that we had only really ever seen from the perspective of Gene Roddenberry. It had it's basis on a classic movie and had a great lead actor in the form of Richard Dean Anderson, and it mixed in enough cult references and metaphors to ground it in reality so we could relate. It also worked because other than STAR TREK, there was very little quality SCIFI on our screens at the time.

By no means was SG1 prefect at the start of its run...........some of the earlier episodes are rubbish when viewed now against some later episodes.......but because of the lack of SCIFI programing it was given a chance by a lot of viewers and the networks.

ATLANTIS tried to just take the same formula and place it in a different setting and with a new cast and carry on the magic..............opps that didn't work now did it. The fans saw the cracks but gave it a chance, however it turned from a must watch program to a "I'll record it and watch it when I'm bored" program. We saw the signs when the show was reshuffled and Amanda Tapping was added to the cast to bring some of the hardcore SG1 fans over to the newer show....again, mistake because it just showed the weakness of the show against SG1 and the back story.

And then we get SGU announced and I see a glimmer of hope. A new show, new premise, and a totally fresh cast with some great existing actors chucked into the mix to add some star power. I watched and loved the first 3 part story........and even though the stories were bleak and sometimes slow paced, I loved the whole first season.

I think I made note of the cast coming across a little bland in the first few episodes and they needed some fleshing out.........this came later on in the season and really made me invest in the characters and their plight throughout every attack, contagion and trial they suffered on DESTINY.

DESTINY itself was beautiful, dark and mysterious: almost becoming a character in itself and the focus of the series. The characters and their interactions with the ship were mysterious and often disastrous, but their battle to cling to the ship as their best hope of getting home was powerful and brings the characters from 2D soldiers in a program and gives them some life and soul and makes you root for them.

Now what was wrong with the show...............well it aimed too high. I know that's a stupid thing to saw but it's true. Geeks don't like a lot of change and this turned SG1 on its head. It was too intelligent and too heavy for some people that liked to jump in and out of the previous programs, and it was very dark and brutal at times. It was a very real series, even down to the recruitment of a normal everyday geek like Eli at the start of the series, to having all the D list characters that you see in the background of the various series taking centre stage in the series. These aren't the all American heroes that we usually see in programs such as this, and although this helped widen the show to other viewers it also alienated the fan base that just wanted a safe show.

None of this was a bad thing in my opinion, and I think It worked and drew the show into reality. I was looking forward to seeing the show grow into a classic series, and it had already started to develop and grow only to be cut off in its infancy.

I only hope that we get some resolution and have even a small bit of closure rather than just leaving DESTINY flying through the cosmos with the intrepid SGC crew.

And what now for the STARGATE franchise? Movies? New series? Probably not. And why? Because of some moron fans that didn't like a little change and couldn't give SGU a chance......well done ass*oles! Why not screw everyone over with your stupidity.

SGU I salute you, for trying something different and breaking the mould. I'll catch you on a rerun.

SYFY..............YOU SUCK!!!! POSSIBLY EVEN MORE THAN FOX!!!!!!!! AND THAT SAYS SOMETHING!!!!!!!

TRON: LEGACY - MUST WATCH MOVIE

If you haven't braved the winter weather and gone to see TRON: LEGACY........WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!!!

I went into this movie fully expecting a 3D explosion of action and set pieces to enhance the 3D and sod the story.........boy was I wrong. Yes, granted, this isn't Hamlet by any stretch but it's also not the sh*t-fest that was CLASH OF THE TITANS. We see a sequel (not a remake as the cinema exec's seem so intent on making these days) to the original TRON movie, and everything we see is an upgrade on the original. The foundations have been set, and we enter into "the grid" with Sam FLYNN (garret Hedlund) getting stuck there as did his father years before. The story is a simple one. Dad goes missing, Sam goings looking, finds Dad along with some other crazy computer programs, kinda falls for computer program/anomaly Quorra (Olivia Wilde), rescues Dad from crazy clone of Dad Clu, tries to escape and eventually does but with Dad doing an Obi Wan and sacrificing himself to save his son and Quorra.

Yes, it's seems like a simple plot but has a strong visual style to carry the story, plenty of action, and Bridges is great as always as FLYNN, and on the flip side he is also good as Clu. We see BOXLIETNER pop up as TRON and alter ego in the real world Alan BRADLEY.......I'm guessing he'll play a bigger part in the sequel but if you haven't seen it I won't spoil it. Garret Hedlund is pretty solid as Sam FLYNN but couldn't have carried the movie alone......whether that's the writing/story or his acting is yet to be seen.

The star in my eyes is Olivia Wilde.....not because she's incredibly sexy but because I think she's a great and versatile actress. She has some truly touching moments in the movie as she shows her almost childlike view on the real world that she's learnt from FLYNN.................but it does help that she's really hot too.

I personally have a very mixed view of the original TRON, and I'm hoping that not knowing every little bit about the original doesn't put people off watching this as it's a great movie and a fitting end to the 2010 movie season.......and looking back at some of the crap that's been pushed out of the bowels of Hollywood this year, this is probably the best scifi movie of the year.

All I can say is, thankfully this is something DISNEY haven't managed to screw up.....which at least bodes well for Marvel movies. DK

TRAILER DUMP - What's coming soon.

Here's some of the highlights coming next year.

Enjoy.

WELCOME TO ASGARD - THOR TRAILER LOOKS EPIC

The trailer for THOR is officially here, with more than the leaked teaser trailer previously released. It shows a unique mix of sword and sorcery, with action and sci fi..........I must say that I am intrigued and am looked forward to this a a lot.

The only downer is that this appears to have started the 3D revolution with MARVEL movies.......I am getting to the point that I will start refusing to watch films because they're in 3D. It's a gimic and annoying.......anyone that braved CLASH OF THE TITANS can recall how bad post production 3D conversion can look.

I think I'll catch the 2D version.

Watch the trailer and enjoy.

Redband trailer for YOUR HIGHNESS - Awesome!!

I just watched this and laughed my ass off............never heard of the movie until now, but has a mixed of zooey deschanel's heaving breasts, Natalie Portman looking sexy as hell, and drugs, swearing and general funnies!!! Check out the trailer ( especially if you wanna see Natalie Portman's backside!!!) This is NSFW.

BATTLE: LOS ANGELES TRAILER FINALLY HERE!!!

At last, we finally get footage of BATTLE: LA...........and boy does it look good. I first caught some buzz about this in 2009, and the wait has been long. It appears that this'll be worth it.

I heard It described as BLACK HAWK DOWN mixed with INDEPENDENCE DAY with a sprinkling of WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Fingers crossed this'll live up to the building hype and anticipation.

I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out an awesome REAL firing M41A pulse rifle from ALIENS!!!! Damn British gun laws, cause I'd love to take one of these down to my local gun club and tear some targets up..............or to use it on the local "chav's"!!!!!!!!!!!!

HALO REACH REVIEW!!

Been a long time since my last post but been too busy in the toy world. One toy in particular is Halo Reach which has been a very successful toy but I'm going to be talking about my experience with the game which I just completed 2 hours ago. Where to start, well once I turned the game on and the music started it felt like it was going to be an Epic Game and I had goosebumps. The Graphics, detail and layout is completly awesome it doesn't have that colourful look that halo 3 has, it is alot darker and has a feel of despair. This Game has a Fantastic storyline and I got really into it and I didn't want to stop playing I just wanted to know what happens next, it gives you a feel that when you have finished a mission and thats a good job something worse happens and thats when you know what this game is all about. I felt personally that the controls were a bit different but you get used to that within a couple of minutes, the Spartans weapons are good but felt like these should be different as the game is a prequel to Halo 3 so surely these should be older, then again I haven't checked the time frame between Reach and Halo 3. I have not played Reach online yet but will do soon, I have already heard that it is very good so I will give it ago soon. I would love to say more but I don't want to give away the story line and I really hope this is not the end from Bungie, if so I reckon they should re release Halo 1 and 2 until the time they will do another and bring back Mastercheif. Enjoy the game and if you dont thier is something wrong with you and if you haven't bought this game then what you waiting for go and buy it! This is Massive 10 from me.

Hey guys and gals. The time is almost upon us for my new superstore "Red Sun Comics & Collectables" to open. We launch on October 9th at 9am with guests signing at 10am. We have Jeremy Bulloch (original star Wars trilogy Boba Fett), Warwick Davis (Wicket in Return of the Jedi, Willow and Harry Potter) and Marvel, DC and 2000AD artist Lee Townsend attending. Prices will be up on the flyers and posters next week but should range from £10 to £15 per autograph. We'll also not only have our awesome mascot superhero "The Red Sun" in attendance (images from the recent Essex Chronicle photo shoot below) but also the fantastic guys from the 501st UK Garrison costuming group who will be attending in numerous Star Wars and movie costumes (including a stunning life-size remote R2-D2!).

We have two competitions on the day which are "Best costumed customer" and "best new superhero drawing brought with you" which will earn the winners a couple of large Krypto the Superdog and/or Bathound plushes. Standard blog posts will continue here very shortly too. ;)

Thanks!

Oh and yes that's me dressed in the Red Sun armour with Carley from High Chelmer management and a passer-by with me!

Otakon Video - Cosplay At Its Purest

As you may be aware I've not only visited the San Diego Comic Con twice in the past few years but also go to almost all of the UK based geek conventions too. Not only that but I'm opening one of Essex's biggest and best entertainment merchandise/comic book stores next month too, so I'm getting even deeper into not only the geek world with cosplay, manga and anime but all my staff are girls and they're all going to dress in various themed costumes at certain times too...

Where oh where is this leading you may ask? Well watch the video below of the many girls (and some freaky guys) at the Otakon event in the US and you'll see why I mentioned the above. Very cool... some of it anyway!.

PS: Is it me or is Katy Perry and Snoop Dog's newest song 'California Gurls' actually really good?

New Back To The Future Game From Telltale Games!

As if it wasn't enough for BTTF fans that we're getting a cinema re-release and the whole trilogy on Blu-Ray next month, now we're going to get a brand new 5 episode video game too!

Bob Gale (who wrote the screenplays for the trilogy) and Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown) will work with Telltale Games (who recently released a series of Sam and Max games for Xbox Live etc) and the story will feature the DeLorean, Hill Valley and of course a plethora of supporting characters from the movies.

No date is set just yet but the character designs for both Marty and the Doc are below.

"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads..." Awesome!

Atomic Robo - Trailer

Atomic Robo is one of my favourite new comics of recent times. It reminds me of Hellboy and the Rocketeer and has a wit and charm that a lot of other comics in the mainstream market just don't have.

This trailer is actually for a short cartoon based on the comic and although you don't see much I'm sure if they can get the action, humour and snappy one-liners right they'll have a little cult cartoon on their hands in no time. It's all looking a bit more like a moving comic and in some parts like Beavis and Butthead (you'll see what I mean) at this time but it's early days...

Star Wars: Force Unleashed 2 - Video With Yoda On Dagoba

One game I'm seriously looking forward to is Star Wars: Force Unleashed 2. Being a sequel you'd think it'd be hard to use the same character that apparently died at the end of the last game... but then don't forget about Kamino and cloning. Yes that's right, the new protagonist is a supposedly mind-wiped clone of the original Starkiller who, after events of A New Hope, sets out to find his way in the world (or galaxy) with increased force powers and a whole bunch of bad guys to deal with, not least of whom is Boba Fett!

This scene is where Starkiller has been advised by General Kota to visit the Cave of Evil on Dagoba to seek direction and comes across a familiar face...

Looking good.

How Not To Test An Airbag... Video

I alost cried with laughter after watching this... and I probably shouldn't have as the poor guy who it happens to looks so out of it he was probably seriously hurt!

Live Action Video Trailers For Halo Reach And Metroid: Other M

Two video game trailers here for the upcoming Halo: Reach and Metroid: Other M releases, both with live action footage. Both very cool!

I've Got A Bad Feeling About This - 1980 Interview With Mark Hamill & Harrison Ford

Why is it that this video seems so damned embarrassing? I was two years old when these awkward yet serious and enthusiastic actors did their interview discussing the sequel to A New Hope. Crazy to think that not only would the movies become legendary but Mark and Harrison as well!

Star Wars Uncut Is Finally Finished!

Yes Star Wars Uncut, the massive project combining hundreds of mini Star Wars movie scenes into one whole movie, is finally finished.

You can watch the whole film HERE which is most definitley a sight to behold... in a good way!

Epic Mickey - New Opening Cinematic Trailer

Epic Mickey is a future game based on Mickey Mouse and the many lands of Disney that fall into darkness when the curious mouse accidentally releases evil magic into them.

There's a lot of online hate out there for this game already but personally I like the look of it and I've never really played a Disney/Mickey game before... I'm sure my eldest would love it!

Possessed Cat?

Had to put this vid up as it made me laugh. Is he possessed or just doing a Gollum impression? It's funny either way!

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Offcial Trailer

Oh yeah baby, can't wait for this new Superman/Batman movie featuring Supergirl and Darkseid... Loved the others, gonna love this one too!

Star Wars Coming To Blu-Ray Autumn 2011

At Celebration V recently George Lucas stated that Star Wars would finally come to Blu-Ray in Autumn 2011 which will include all 6 movies in one hi-def box set. The set will also include extensive special features including documentaries, vintage behind the scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never before seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.

To be honest I'm collecting all my favourite movies on Blu-Ray at the moment having bought a PS3 at Christmas and there's no way in hell I'd miss out on having the Star Wars movies in my collection!

Blackstar Warrior Trailer!

Lando Calrissian from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as a 70's Blacksploitation character? Ultra cool...

Isn't the guy playing Lando the same guy who played Forrest from season 4 of Buffy and D.L. from Heroes?

Monsters - New Teaser Trailer And Poster

'Monsters' is a new low budget sci-fi alien movie from Gareth Evans which could be a sleeper hit not unlike the success District 9 gained after its release.

There's a hell of a lot of buzz around this movie and from the looks of it it's a 28 Days Later type of thriller rather than an all out action sci-fi movie.

Here's the synopsis:

Six years ago previously, a NASA probe returning to earth with samples of an alien life form, crashed over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear, and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"... The story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

And here's the poster and trailer:

Back To The Future 25th Anniversary Cinema Re-release & Blu-Ray Boxet

If you weren't aware the original Back to the Future movie is coming back to cinemas on October the 1st and the whole trilogy will be coming out on Blu-Ray too on October the 25th!

The missus and I are HUGE Back to the Future fans (as is Boy Wonder) so not only will we be going to see this re-release in the cinema as a family but we'll be buying the Blu-Ray box set too!

Awesome Star Wars Gif...

Gotta love this Star Wars themed gif. Finish him!!! ;)
